  • Patent number: 4160220
Abstract: A resistive material in the evanescent field of a transmission line, such as microstrip line, is employed to vernier adjust the phase delay introduced by the line. While the phase delay is being measured, the position of the resistive material, which is being held in place by cement which has not yet set, is altered, until the precise phase delay desired is reached, and then the cement is permitted to harden. The resistive material employed is of the type normally used as an absorber, such as Eccosorb, and its resonant frequency is a fraction of the signal frequency.

  • Patent number: 4158825
Abstract: An expansion joint for connecting sections of waveguide includes a plurality of spacer discs mounted on a plurality of guide rods. The guide rods are rigidly affixed to a termination member. Washer type springs are employed between the individual spacer discs on the guide rods for controlling increases and decreases in the space between the discs and, hence, compensating for contraction and expansion, respectively, of the waveguide sections while maintaining a uniform electrical path through the joint. Additional spacer discs having various thicknesses are also employed to allow for a predetermined maximum initial length adjustment within a prescribed tolerance.

  • Patent number: 4156858
Abstract: A transversal filter of the split electrode type employing a bucket-brigade device (BBD) is described. The BBD wells extend beyond the edges of the clocked gates of the BBD below second gates of different areas. These mask programmed second gates provide the filter output. Unlike other split electrode, capacitance sensing filters, these gates are not clocked, thus the filter has simplified output circuitry and a greater dynamic range.

  • Patent number: 4156861
Abstract: A microwave-type device such as a mixer is disclosed having an improved diode mount with the position of the diode within the waveguide determined solely by the position of a contact rod extending into the waveguide on the side of the waveguide opposite the ground contact of the diode. The contact rod mates with the active contact of the diode by an annular spring fashioned at the waveguide end of the rod. The annular spring also provides a stop against which the diode rests thus determining its position. Electrical connection to the ground contact is made through a second annular spring. A coil spring provides longitudinal force holding the diode in position against the contact rod.

  • Patent number: 4156214
Abstract: Three electrode pairs are formed on a monolithic piezoelectric element which exhibits anisotropic properties with respect to its X and Z axes. The electrodes of each pair are located on opposite sides of the piezoelectric element, with all electrodes being of predetermined dimensions. The first and second electrode pairs are aligned on the X axes at a predetermined spacing therebetween. The second and third electrode pair are aligned on the Z axis, also at a predetermined spacing. In circuit operation, a signal to be processed is coupled to the first electrode pair and extracted from the third electrode pair, with the electrodes of the second pair shorted together. In this manner, the resonator displays a three pole passband characteristic having excellent spur suppression.

  • Patent number: 4153994
Abstract: A 90 degree phase stepper is described comprising a tandem array of three, 3 db hybrid couplers where the first and third couplers are of one variety (either 90 degree or 180 degree couplers) and the second is of the other variety. A pair of variable phase shifters are located in the two wavepaths connecting the first and second couplers, and a single variable phase shifter is included in one of the two wavepaths connecting the second and third couplers. Each phase shifter introduces either a zero or a 180 degree phase shift. By the appropriate selection of phase shifts, the phase of the output signal can be stepped in 90 degree increments. The stepper is designed for use in the signal combining circuit of a space diversity system. It is an advantage of the circuit that all of the received signal is preserved.

  • Patent number: 4155057
Abstract: A surface acoustic wave low loss filter device having input and output transducers located along opposed sides of a rectangular propagation path with frequency selective reflective gratings at each of the four corners of the rectangle. Two traveling surface waves traverse the device along opposed paths encountering frequency filtering at the gratings. The two waves arrive at the output transducer additively in phase eliminating the bidirectionality loss normally associated with surface acoustic wave devices. At frequencies for which the gratings are reflective there can be nearly lossless transmission from input to output. At all other frequencies, transmission between input and output transducers is negligible. The device has high sidelobe rejection, adjustable passband skirt slopes, and an adjustable bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 4155056
Abstract: Acoustical and optical surface wave filters are described wherein the filter characteristic near resonance is provided by cascaded grating resonators. The out-of-band suppression for these resonators is provided by a track changing element that includes a four-port directional coupler having one port connected to receive input energy and a fourth port connected to couple energy into the cascaded grating resonators. Tapered and chirped reflection gratings are positioned so as to selectively reflect energy present at the second and third ports of the directional coupler. In a surface acoustic wave embodiment of the invention, the directional coupler is provided by a multistrip coupler. In an optical embodiment, the directional coupler function is provided by waveguiding structures that are brought sufficiently close to induce 3 dB coupling.

  • Patent number: 4153887
Abstract: A bandpass filter is described for filtering a television signal. The filter has a passband which may be selectively centered for filtering signals in one of two channels of the television receiver. The television channel at which the filter passband is centered is selectable by applying a voltage to a control terminal. The filter frequency response for each channel selected may be independently controlled and a linear phase response is realized for the selected channel minimizing distortion.

  • Patent number: 4151492
Abstract: A reflective grating for a surface acoustic wave device is formed of interleaved sets of contiguous metal strips deposited on the surface of the device. The metal in one set of the strips has a density greater than that of the acoustic propagating medium of the device while the metal of the second set of strips has a density essentially equal to that of the acoustic propagating medium of the device. Typically, a piezoelectric material such as a crystal of quartz or a crystal of lithium niobate is utilized as the base material of the device with the grating being formed of an overlay of alternating strips of gold and aluminum.

  • Patent number: 4146852
Abstract: An acoustic surface wave signal transmission device includes a medium having a surface suitable for propagating acoustic energy or waves and having a first impedance characteristic. The surface of the medium includes an array of periodic discontinuities of a second impedance characteristic. The widths of the discontinuities vary in a predetermined manner to reflect a portion of said acoustic energy in proportion to the widths of the discontinuities. A transmitting transducer on said surface converts an input electrical signal into corresponding acoustic energy or waves and launches the energy or waves on said medium toward said array of discontinuities. The acoustic energy is reflected from said array of discontinuities toward a receiving transducer which converts the reflected acoustic energy or waves into a corresponding electrical signal.
