    Abstract: A propeller grinding device and method employs two endless grinding belts which are transported past a grinding station to finish the front and back surfaces. A propeller blank is inserted between the belts and the belts are distorted by platens, each of which includes a plurality of independent platen vanes. Two cams selectively bear upon two camming surfaces of the vanes and move the vanes into desired positions corresponding to the surface contours to be formed on the front and back surfaces of the propeller blades. The cams are rotated as the blade is moved. They also may be moved along the camming surfaces. Additionally, the cams and platens may be moved parallel to the direction of cam rotation with respect to the belts. SUBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention relates to grinding devices and, more particularly, to a grinder having an endless grinding belt capable of grinding contours, such as the airfoil shape of a propeller.

    Abstract: A machine for successively grinding and polishing tools such as gravers of hard metal has grinding and polishing wheels mounted in parallel shafts on a support which can be moved to bring either wheel to face a tool held in a workpiece holder. The polishing wheel can be moved to an extreme position which is precisely set by a micrometer screw so that it comes to occupy exactly the same position formerly occupied by the grinding wheel. Alternatively, the workpiece-carrier can be moved by a cam system to exactly position the tool against the two wheels.

    Abstract: An acoustic suppression panel is provided with a perforated plate covering a layer of a bulk absorber. A flexible, fluid-impervious membrane is placed between the plate and the bulk absorber, and supported in a manner so as to permit the membrane to become essentially acoustically transparent. An acoustically hard backing plate is disposed adjacent the bulk absorber, the backing plate being provided with perforations to allow pressure equalization for flight applications. A facing sheet of sintered metal covers the perforated plate to provide an aerodynamically continuous flow surface for the plate which is highly resistant to foreign object impact.

    Abstract: An actuator for a rotating frame animal trap. The actuator comprises two arms spring biased at one end to tend to move the other ends of the arms outwardly. Each arm terminates in a ring that is adapted to encircle adjacent frames of the trap. The actuator is easy to make and provides excellent squeezing power where that power is required.

    Abstract: An animal trap having two similar frames each having jaw forming sides that lie in a common plane and ends extending therebetween to support the jaws. The ends have a central portion in which the frames are pivotally connected through adjacent ends for rotation about a common axis between set and closed positions. Outer portions on each side of the central portion extend to the jaws. At least one actuator is capable of rapidly and forcefully effecting the rotation. The actuator has two arms spring-biased at one end so that the other ends, which terminate in rings encircling adjacent ends of both frames on opposite sides of said axis, would, if unobstructed, move apart to a distance substantially greater than the length of the frame ends. A trigger means releasably maintains the trap in the set position. The trigger means comprises a pivotally mounted treadle extending between the frames of the trap. Engagement means are associated with the treadle.

    Abstract: A housing for an arrangement of mechanical gears which includes pairs of meshing gears for transmitting driving force between a drive shaft and a driven shaft. The housing comprises a high strength supporting structure carrying bearings for journaling the respective shafts for each of the gears. The supporting structure includes a plurality of individual bending resistant girder members extending between the bearings journaling the shafts for the gears of each pair of meshing gears. The girders which extend between the bearings correspond to and absorb the reaction forces acting between the bearings. The girders have reinforcing chords made of material which is rigid along the longitudinal direction thereof. A protective skin which is unstressed by the reaction forces encloses the entire arrangement of gears and the supporting structure.

    Abstract: One end of a base plate is formed with an elongated opening and the other end rotatably supports the base end of an elastic plate whose free end is inserted in the above mentioned elongated opening. The elastic plate is longer than the base plate and formed with an engagement projection adjacent the free end thereof. In setting the elastic plate, it is upwardly curved and an engagement member is interposed between the upper surface of the base plate and the engagement projection so as to engage the elastic plate and maintain its curved condition. The engagement member will be moved by a small animal taking a bait or by the weight of a small animal treading on the base plate. Such movement of the engagement member results in relieving the engagement, so that the elastic plate is instantaneously elastically restored to its flat condition, thereby trapping the small animal by squeezing it between the base plate and the elastic plate.

    Abstract: A slicing band consists of a base and an integral reduced cross section shank which is formed continuously throughout the length of the band. At the end of the shank is a scalloped cutting edge with inclined faces which intersect at the cutting edge of the scallops. The blade is constructed from an apparatus which utilizes two rotatable grinding wheels each with a flat annular grinding surface adapted to contact first one side of the blade and then the opposite side of the blade while the blade is yieldably retained against lateral movement and to effect material reduction to form the reduced cross section shank. The grinding wheel consists of cubic boron nitride, capable of performing material removal without burning or compromising the strength or other material requirements of the blade.
