  • Patent number: 5251770
Abstract: A container and pressure sealing closure combination in which the closure includes a rim portion engaging the mouth of the container, a substantially rigid central portion and an annular toggle portion pivotally connected to and interconnecting the rim portion and central portion, whereby upward movement of the central portion in response to internal pressure of the contents of the container pivots the toggle portion to urge the rim portion substantially radially outwardly against the mouth, thereby effecting a seal. In a preferred embodiment, the inner surface of the container mouth includes a plurality of axially-extending channels for conducting pressurized gaseous contents of the container between the closure and the container to the ambient. The outer surface of the mouth includes an annular recess which receives a plurality of radially inwardly projecting ribs on the rim portion, thereby effecting engagement between the closure and container.

  • Patent number: 5249692
Abstract: A vapor seal for use in a container holding an air curable liquid for preventing the surface of the liquid from being exposed to air to eliminate skinning thereon when the container is stored in a partially full state. The vapor seal generally comprises a support member having a seal member attached thereto and extending radially outward therefrom. The seal member defines a peripheral edge and a lower, liquid contacting surface, and is sized and configured such that the peripheral edge is abutted and sealed against the inner surface of the container when the lower surface is floated upon :he surface of the liquid. The vapor seal further includes a handle member which is attached to and extends upwardly from the top surface of the support member for inserting the vapor seal into and removing the vapor seal from within the container.

  • Patent number: 5248057
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a versatile double actuation lid assembly for commercial trash containers of the type having a main rear generally rectangular volume and a slanted front opening making a predetermined acute angle with respect to the horizontal. The front and rear sections of this lid have aligned lower edge surfaces for resting on the edges of the containers front openings. Each of the lid sections is formed of two spaced layers of plastic material. A means for pivotally actuating the lid sections together, including hinge lugs on each lid section extending towards the other, a pivot bar extending through openings in these hinge lugs, and an actuating lever for pivotally actuating the lid sections together. The clearance angle between the upper surfaces of the front and rear lid sections is sufficient so that the lid may be opened to a stable position slightly beyond the vertical while the rear lid section remains fully closed, for the deposit of small items of trash.

  • Patent number: 5246134
Abstract: A press-on closure 10 for a tubular container 12. The closure includes a molded plastic frame 14 having a ledge 28 on which an end panel 16 is seated and to which the end panel is peelably secured. The end panel has a free outer peripheral edge unbonded to the frame. The resultant closed container is subject to retorting with the result that heretofore the end panel could axially outwardly deform and possibly initiate internal peeling. To prevent this peeling, the frame is provided with a thin flexible integral flange 36 forming a continuation of the ledge on which the end panel is seated. The end panel is also peelably bonded to the flange and the flange deforms or deflects with the end panel. The frame has a press fit onto the container, which is preferably in the form of a metal can, which at the end thereof to be closed by the closure is provided with a radially outwardly directed curl 48.

  • Patent number: 5242072
Abstract: A cap for a fill pipe of a fluid container, such as a gas tank, is provided. It has a vent hole which is normally held unsealed by the weight of a ball which impinges against and thereby tilts a spring loaded pin carrying an O-ring. When the cap tips away from the vertical by more than a pre-selected angle, the ball rolls away from the pin and the spring urges the pin to an orientation where the O-ring seals the hole. When the container is tipped beyond the pre-selected angle, should the internal tank pressure exceed a pre-determined level, the pressure overcomes the force of the spring allowing relief venting.
