  • Patent number: 8452273
Abstract: Systems, apparatus, and methods are disclosed for accurately identifying a moving thing motion activity (MTMA) associated with a mobile thing (MT) using only accelerometer data from a wireless communication device (WCD) transported by the MT so as to enable or initiate a further one or more activity based actions. One such method, among others, comprises: (a) receiving first and second data from an accelerometer associated with a wireless communication device (WCD) transported by a mobile thing (MT), the first and second data indicative of acceleration of the WCD; (b) determining reference data that defines a reference framework in two dimensions (2D) of space from the first data; (c) normalizing the second data with the reference data so that the second data can be analyzed in the 2D space; and (d) identifying a mobile thing motion activity (MTMA) associated with the MT based upon the normalized second data.

  • Patent number: 8446879
Abstract: Soft handoff in an OFDMA system is disclosed. If the pilot signal strength for a base station exceeds the defined threshold, the base station is added to an active set list. Subcarriers in a plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols are divided and allocated into subchannels. The OFDM symbols are divided and multiplexed. A soft handoff zone with a first dimension of the subchannels and a second dimension of the divided and multiplexed OFDM symbols is defined. The soft handoff zone has subcarriers with a subchannel definition, for example, an identical permutation.

  • Patent number: 8437766
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate to wireless communications networks, and more specifically to an antenna apparatus for cellular wireless systems. Increasing data capacity of cellular wireless systems places increasing demands on the capacity of the two way connection, known as backhaul, between a cellular base station and a telecommunications network such as the PSTN backhaul, since this is the connection that has to convey the wireless-originating traffic to its destination, often in an entirely different network. Known backhaul links include leased lines, microwave links, optical fibre links or radio resources for relaying backhaul traffic between base stations. The fixed line solutions are expensive to implement and maintain, while the radio solutions antenna configurations that are not ideal for relaying data between base stations.

  • Patent number: 8437750
Abstract: A mobile network comprises remote base transceiver station (BTS) nodes (3, 4) linked with a central base station controller (BSC) node (9). The latter is in turn linked with a mobile switching center (MSC, 10), a visitor location register (VLR, 11), and a home location register (HLR, 8). Mobile stations (2, MS-A, MS-B, and MS-C) are located in the cells of the BTSs (3, 4). The remote nodes (3, 4, 3(a), 4(a)) are connected to the central node BSC (9) over a remote backhaul satellite connection. Calls are routed locally while the central nodes continue to manage calls and services from central feature-rich and typically more reliable switches of a core network. This means that calls set up between subscribers on the same remote node get connected within the remote node but call supervision is still carried out by the central nodes. The features and services of the existing core network are preserved.

  • Patent number: 8428603
Abstract: A system and method for performing paging in an area where a macro Base Station (BS) and a femto Access Services Network (ASN) are linked in a mobile network are provided. The method includes, during handover of a Mobile Station (MS) between a macro ASN and a femto ASN, a first gateway of a current ASN acquires paging group information of a previous ASN. Upon request for paging from the MS in the current ASN, the first gateway requests a BS of the previous ASN to transmit paging information to the MS based on the paging group information of the previous ASN. By doing so, paging success rate may be improved for an MS in coverage of a macro ASN linked to a femto BS, and the high paging success rate may be guaranteed regardless of whether the handover scheme is a controlled handover scheme or an uncontrolled handover scheme.

  • Patent number: 8422987
Abstract: A method and wireless device augment and manage, respectively, emergency alert messages with additional emergency information. An emergency alert message is determined to have been sent (404) to one or more wireless devices (102) in a given area. The emergency alert message is analyzed (406) to determine a type of emergency associated with the emergency alert message. Optionally, a current location of at least one wireless device (102) within the given area is determined. A message is generated (412), based at least in part on the type of emergency and logistics of the given area, including additional emergency information for augmenting the emergency alert message. The message that has been generated is transmitted to the at least one wireless device (102). • Patent number: 8417270
Abstract: A system provides Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) to mobile stations through a wireless communication network for person-to-person traffic and traffic to/from an application. The network may include a plurality of Multimedia Messaging Service Centers (MMSCs) coupled to the wireless communication network for MMS communication between two mobile stations, and between a mobile station and an application during call origination mode operations. A second MMSC coupled to the wireless communication network, provides MMS communications between mobile stations and one or more applications during call termination mode operations. In a mobile origination mode operation, the second MMSC concentrates signaling from the first MMSCs and forwards received MMS data, and in a mobile termination mode operations, the second MMSC delivers MMS data to a destination mobile station without forwarding the MMS data to one of the first MMSCs.
