  • Patent number: 4481918
Abstract: A reciprocating engine, preferably a high speed internal combustion engine, includes means for reducing vibration. The engine has at least one piston, a connecting rod connected at one end to the piston and at the other end to a crankshaft. A pair of balancing links are pivotally mounted on the crankshaft and guide links constrain the balancing links to follow paths generally normal to the crankshaft axis and in opposition to the piston. The guide links extend in opposite directions and are attached to the balancing links and to a fixed point to balance out the vibrational forces of the engine.

  • Patent number: 4480603
Abstract: A V-type internal combustion engine having double overhead camshafts contains automatic mechanism for maintaining tension in the endless timing chain which drives the camshafts from the engine crankshaft. The two sides of the V-type engine are substantial duplicates. A tensioner body engages the slack side of the chain and is caused to move in a direction to tighten the chain to maintain desired chain tension. The tensioner body is operated by a curved arm member which is pivoted to a stationary support at a position in the dead space between the driven sprockets for the two camshafts. Resilient means acts on the curved arm member in a direction to tighten the tensioner body against the chain, and a rocking member acted on by the resilient means prevents retrograde movement of the curved arm member, so that chain tension is maintained even when the chain stretches after a period of use.

  • Patent number: 4479470
Abstract: An intake passage structure for an internal combustion engine includes a primary air-fuel mixture passage disposed remotely from a water jacket located below a secondary air-fuel mixture passage. A secondary slow fuel supply passage extends from a float chamber adjacent to the primary air-fuel mixture passage so that fuel in the secondary slow fuel supply passage will be cooled by an air-fuel mixture flowing through the primary air-fuel mixture passage, thereby preventing vapor lock from occuring in the secondary slow fuel supply passage. The primary air-fuel mixture passage is composed of a common passageway, a distribution slot and branch slots for supplying an air-fuel mixture to engine cylinders. The distribution and branch slots are closed by a cylinder head. Any liquid fuel in the distribution and branch slots are vaporized with heat from the cylinder head.

  • Patent number: 4478179
Abstract: An internal combustion engine combines the efficiency of a radial engine with the practicality of a piston and crankshaft arrangement. A stationary frame supports a stationary sun gear, and a rotor is pivoted about the axis of the sun gear. The rotor carries three crankshafts at 120.degree. intervals, each having an eccentric portion. Each crankshaft is fixed to rotate with a respective planetary gear, and all the planetary gears mesh with the sun gear and have the same pitch diameter as the sun gear. The crankshaft eccentricity is substantially 1/3 times the pitch radius of a planetary gear. The eccentric portion of each crankshaft has roller means rotatable about the same axis as the connection between the connecting rod and the eccentric portion, and a ring member with an internal surface surrounds and contacts all of the roller means simultaneously, the ring member being free to rotate about its own axis. Three valves admit the combustible mixture to each cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4470382
Abstract: A valve lash adjuster for a horizontally opposed engine in which valves are horizontally disposed and the adjuster for each valve is also horizontally disposed. The adjuster has a cylindrical body and a hollow plunger. The tip end of the plunger engages with a rocker arm of a valve lifting device of the engine. The plunger has a ball check valve for trapping oil in a pressure chamber defined behind the plunger and is outwardly biased by a spring for taking up clearance in the valve train. Passages are provided for supplying the lubricating oil into an annular groove provided around the cylindrical body. The passages are located at such positions that the oil remains in the groove. The inside chamber of the plunger is communicated with the annular groove through a hole located to communicate with the annular groove at the oil remaining zone, so that the oil is maintained in the inside chamber of the plunger and the pressure chamber.

  • Patent number: 4457270
Abstract: An oil-containing hydraulic lifter for lash adjustment comprising relatively movable cylinder and plunger members defining a pressure chamber between their closed ends and a reservoir chamber within the plunger. Means are provided for rapid, one-way flow of the oil from the reservoir to the pressure chamber during outward movement of the plunger and for slow, one-way flow from the pressure to the reservoir chamber during inward movement of the plunger. A flexible, bag-shaped diaphragm extending into the reservoir chamber has its open, upper end sealed liquid tightly to the inner wall of the reservoir for sealing in the oil while expanding and collapsing with reciprocation of the plunger. The reservoir chamber has an increased diameter at that part where the diaphragm undergoes most of its expansion and collapse, thereby spacing the inner wall of the reservoir chamber from the diaphragm by a distance great enough to allow full expansion of the diaphragm in the expanding and collapsing operation thereof.
