  • Patent number: 4679832
Abstract: A one-piece flange ring for mounting in an open pipe includes a flange, an outer and an inner leg projecting from the flange, and an outer and an inner annularly projecting land for engaging the inner wall of the pipe. The outer leg is closer to the inner wall of the pipe than the inner leg when installed in the pipe. The outer and the inner leg are substantially parallel to one another and a capable of being fixed under stress with respect to the flange by the inner wall of the pipe when the legs are driven into the open pipe. The outer and the inner pipe engaging lands have an outer diameter greater than the inner diameter of the pipe before installation in the pipe, and they are flexed under stress toward the center of the pipe when the flange ring is installed in the pipe. The outer and the inner pipe engaging lands have an outer diameter equal to the inner diameter of the pipe after installation in the pipe. The outer and the inner pipe engaging lands are bent diagonally toward the flange.

  • Patent number: 4679958
Abstract: A ball joint comprises a ball stud containing a ball at the leading end thereof, a socket incorporating therein a receptacle for admitting of the ball, and a resilient metallic ring containing a gap therein and adapted to retain the ball rotatably within the receptacle. The receptacle is formed of a main body and an auxiliary body adapted to be attached fast to the main body, and at least the main body is formed of a plastic material. Retention of the ball within the socket is accomplished by setting the resilient metallic ring in position within the receptacle before attachment of the auxiliary body to the main body, driving the ball into the receptacle thereby causing the equator of the ball to widen the gap in the resilient metallic ring and slide past the ring, and consequently enabling the ring to get hold of the ball.

  • Patent number: 4678166
Abstract: A guardrail terminal for use at the upstream end of a conventional guardrail consisting of a plurality of joined together horizontally extending W-beam guardrails which are layered in a curve away from the traffic side of the guardrail in an upstream direction. An eccentric lever is connected to the upstream end of the terminal for introducing a bending moment on the terminal whereby an impacting vehicle at the upstream end will facilitate buckling of the rails and allow the vehicle to pass behind the terminal instead of being speared or spun around by an end on impact. The rails are supported by break-away supports and the rails are secured to only the first upstream vertical support but are laterally movable relative to the other vertical supports. The lever includes a metal beam connected perpendicular to the upstream end and extends away from the traffic side and a tubular member encloses the first support, the metal beam and the end of the upstream rail.

  • Patent number: 4678210
Abstract: The loading and locking mechanism includes a first cylindrical member with means defining a circumferential groove therein having a first surface of revolution disposed at an angle with the axis of the first cylindrical member. Cooperating with the first cylindrical member is a second cylindrical member having an axial opening sized to accommodate the first cylindrical member and an inside surface groove having a second surface of revolution disposed at an angle with the axis of the second cylindrical member. A continuous ellipsoidal spring having canted coils is disposed in both first and second cylindrical member grooves for forcing the first and second surfaces of revolution away from one another to cause axial loading between the first and second cylindrical members. Additional locking surfaces may be provided each of the first and second grooves which are disposed generally perpendicular to the first and second cylindrical member axis.

  • Patent number: 4671546
Abstract: A sealing device is disclosed for sealing a securing device (17) which extends through adjacent flanges (7,9) of a shell (1) and of a head (3) of a fluid container. The sealing device includes an O-ring seal (23) which slidingly engages the securing device (17) for sealing the securing device relative to the flange (9) of the head. A carrier member (25) through which the securing device extends is urged towards the flange (9) of the head such that the O-ring seal (23) is urged into sealing engagement between the securing device (17) and the flange (9) of the head. The carrier member (25) defines a conical recess (35) for reception therein of the O-ring seal (23) such that when the carrier member (25) is urged towards the flange (9) of the head, the O-ring seal (23) is distorted by reaction between the carrier member (25), the securing device (17) and the flange (9) of the head so the securing device (17) and the flange (9) of the head are sealed relative to each other.

  • Patent number: 4668126
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for remotely connecting or disconnecting upper flexible choke/kill lines (including auxiliary lines) to choke/kill lines of a floating drilling rig riser which has been lowered toward the sea floor. Remote stab assemblies are mounted to a stowable tension ring releasably secured to a housing secured to rig beams. In the stowed position, hydraulic stab connectors secured to travelling yoke assemblies are disconnected from each line. The travelling yoke assemblies are moved to an outer position so that the flexible drape hoses clear the space beneath the housing in order that a blowout preventer stack may be trolleyed in from the side of the rig moon pool during running or retrieval. The stack is lowered toward the sea floor by the riser. A telescopic joint is connected to the top of the riser and lowered through the housing and the tension ring.
