Abstract: Small particle toner images carried on an image member are transferred to thermally conductive intermediate by heating the intermediate in the presence of an electrical field urging transfer. The intermediate is heated to a temperature sufficient to sinter the toner particles at least when they touch the intermediate and other toner particles, but insufficient to damage the image member or cause the toner to stick to the image member. The toner image is transferred from the intermediate to a receiving sheet, which step can include sufficient heat and pressure to fix the image to the receiving sheet.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus comprises a thermal fixing apparatus having a heat generating member and heat-fixing an image on paper, a section for discriminating a using frequency of the image forming apparatus, and a section for controlling a fixing temperature having a first temperature control mode maintaining the temperature of the thermal fixing apparatus to be a first temperature at which the image can be fixed, a second temperature control mode maintaining the temperature of the thermal fixing apparatus to be a second temperature, which is lower than the first temperature by a predetermined temperature, and a third temperature control mode stopping current supply to a heat generating member of the thermal fixing apparatus.
Abstract: A finisher incorporated in an image forming apparatus and capable of setting up a plurality of stapling or otherwise finishing positions in the widthwise direction of a paper sheet. A plurality of bins are each movable in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which it is moved up and down. After one bin has been moved in such a direction until the edge of a paper stack on the paper inlet side has been aligned with a stapling unit, the stapling unit is movable in a direction perpendicular to a paper discharge direction, i.e., in the widthwise direction to staple the paper stack at a plurality of positions.
Abstract: A one-component developing apparatus includes a developing roller which holds a one-component developer and feeds the developer to a photosensitive drum, and a developer layer thickness regulating blade. The regulating blade has an edge which is parallel with a surface of the developing roller and the edge regulates the thickness of the developer layer on the drum. The edge is constructed by being machined along a direction in parallel with the surface of the developer roller. The edge of the regulating blade may be either sharp or rounded.
Abstract: An insulative belt having a conductive pattern. A potential difference is applied to the conductive pattern on the insulative belt creating an attractive force that is exerted on the small particles of paper debris. This attractive force holds the paper fibers and paper dust on the insulative belt for subsequent removal, while allowing the cleaned paper sheet to move on through the electrophotographic system.
Abstract: An image forming apparatus including a movable type developing unit carrying a plurality of developing devices for performing a developing function using a plurality of color toners. The developing unit is vertically moved along a photosensitive drum. It is detected by a sensor whether or not a selected developing device is at a first position of the level of the developing position. In carrying out a developing operation, the developing device at the first position is moved to a second position adjacent to a photosensitive drum. The following problems are detected based on the ON and OFF state of the sensor: if the developing device does not move to the second position a predetermined period of time after an instruction for moving it from the first position to the second position is issued or if the developing device does not move to the first position a predetermined period of time after an instruction for returning it from the second position to the first position is issued.

Abstract: An image forming machine having a lower body in which a feeder of recording sheets is disposed, and an upper body pivotally attached to the lower body in which an image carrier, at least one developing device and a developer container is disposed. The uppermost part of the upper body is provided with a sheet discharge tray for accommodating processed recording sheets. The machine is further provided with a openable cover pivotally attached to the upper body and disposed on the leading end of the tray in a discharging direction of the processed recording sheets. The cover forms an extension of the tray for accommodating the processed recording sheets moved from the tray and a protruded member at one end of the cover for preventing the processed recording sheets on the cover from falling down when the upper cover is opened.
Abstract: An image density control method for an image forming apparatus determines the density of a toner image formed on a photoconductive element by a reflection type photosensor and, if the density is low, supplies a toner to a developing unit. A latent image representative of a reference pattern is electrostatically formed on the photoconductive element and then developed by a toner supplied from the developing unit. The supply of a toner to the developing unit is controlled on the basis of the outputs of the sensor associated with the area of the photoconductive element where the pattern image exists and a non-image area. A particular bias voltage is applied to the developing unit for each of the image area and non-image area.
Abstract: A toner image is fixed to a receiving sheet by positioning the image between the receiving sheet and a hard surface of a web or sheet. Pressure is applied between the surfaces to fix the toner image to the receiving sheet with the toner image above its glass transition temperature. While the surfaces are still in contact, a heat sink member is brought into contact with one of the sheets or web to remove heat from the toner image and reduce the temperature of the toner image below its glass transition temperature allowing the receiving sheet to be separated from the hard surface without offset.
Abstract: An automatic document feeder and copying apparatus is capable of copying the images of two successive documents on one surface of a copying sheet. When the automatic document feeder detects that an odd number of documents have been supplied to the document feeder, the image forming apparatus is controlled so as to form only an image of the first document on a single surface of the first copy paper and then to copy the remaining originals by forming images of two originals on each surface of a copy sheet.
Abstract: An electrophotographic printer using a plurality of types of continuous recording forms having different page lengths, respectively, with perforations being provided between pages of each of the continuous forms. The printer is operated at least in a standby state and in a printing state. The printer comprises feed means for feeding the continuous-form recording sheet loaded into the printer, and control means for controlling the feed means in such a fashion that the perforations is located at a predetermined position when the printer is in the standby state, regardless of the page length of the recording form loaded into the printer. The predetermined position coincides either with an image-transfer position or an image-fixing position.
Abstract: An inside contamination preventing mechanism is provided that is adapted to be positioned in an imaging apparatus utilizing an electrophotographic system for forming an image on a predetermined recording medium and having an air directing mechanism including an air intake portion through which air flows from the outside of the imaging apparatus and a driving member for driving the air to a predetermined portion through a predetermined area within the imaging apparatus, and a toner containing member that is located adjacent to the air intake portion for containing the toner particles remaining in the imaging apparatus after an imaging operation onto the predetermined recording medium. The inside contamination preventing mechanism includes a cover member provided on an inner surface of the imaging apparatus for covering an opening of the toner containing member.

Abstract: An image transferring device incorporated in a color image recorder has a belt made of a dielectric material and movable while sequentially contacting a plurality of photoconductive elements at successive image transfer positions. Toner images formed on the photoconductive elements are sequentially transferred to the belt or a recording medium one above another by transfer chargers. Conductive members are located to face opposite surfaces of the belt and fully spaced apart from the latter by a predetermined distance, and each has an insulating member on the surface thereof that faces the belt. The conductive members are located between a position immediately succeeding the image transfer position on the most upstreamside and the position where the recording medium leaves the belt. A belt pressing member and a transfer charge limiting member are disposed in a position immediately preceding any one of the image transfer positions with respect to an intended direction of movement of the belt.
Abstract: An image forming apparatus wherein toner images formed on a photosensitive member are transferred to a transfer medium and overlaid thereon, and the toner images on the transfer medium are transferred onto a copy sheet. The apparatus has a charger for reducing charge on the toner images transferred to the transfer medium, and output of the charger is controlled in accordance with the number of toner images on the transfer medium. Abstract: This invention relates to an improved automatic document feeder which may be used, for example, on an image forming apparatus. The apparatus in accordance with the invention includes a final document detecting circuit which detects whether a document sent from an original setting device onto an original mounting device is the final document of a set. A normal end detecting device detects whether all of the image forming steps have been completed normally as to the final document of the set. A controlling device moves the final document to be discharged outside of the automatic document feeder after all of the image forming steps have been finished normally on the final document. The controlling device is activated based on signals from the final document detecting device and the normal end detecting device. The control circuit allows documents other than the final document to be moved outside of the image forming device before all of the image forming steps have been completed normally.
Abstract: An image forming apparatus comprising a rotatable transfer drum, chucking member provided at the transfer drum for chucking a transfer paper on the transfer drum and a sensor provided in the vicinity of the transfer drum for detecting the light passing through the transfer drum.
