Abstract: A test for determining hepatic function has been developed. This test uses oral administration of isotope labeled phenylalanine or tyrosine, particularly .sup.13 C-phenylalanine, in a rapid breath test. In the preferred mode, the breath sample is analyzed using a mass spectrometer and compared with a standard. The breath test provides a dynamic rather than static determination of hepatic function and can be used for both early and late stage liver problems.

Abstract: The present invention deals with compositions utilized to demulsify wash liquors, tramp oils or coolants. The compositions of the present invention are useful per se as cleaning compositions. The ability to rapidly demulsify from a waste liquor solution allows rapid recovery of fats, organic components, paint residues, greases and oils and rapid passage of the effluent to a sewage treatment facility.
Abstract: A mesomorphic compound of the formula (I) according to claim 1 is suitable as a component for liquid crystal composition providing improved response characteristics.
Abstract: Gold sol coated with alkanethiols and alkanethiol derivatives, which provide groups on the sol available for the linking of binding moieties such as antibodies, antigens or ligands to the gold sol. Di- and tri-thiol compounds bound to gold sol also facilitate the adsorption of antibodies, antigens or ligands to the sol. The coating process, and test kits incorporating the coated sols are also included.
Abstract: A radioactive diagnostic agent which comprises (1) the unit of a polyformyl compound having at least three formyl groups per molecule, (2) at least two units of an amino group-containing chelating compound bonded to the polyformyl compound with intervention of a methyleneimine linkage (--CH.dbd.N--) or a methyleneamine linkage (--CH.sub.2 NH--) formed by the condensation between the formyl group in the polyformyl compound and the amino group in the chelating compound, optionally followed by reduction, (3) at least one unit of an amino group-containing physiologically active substance bonded to the polyformyl compound with intervention of a methyleneimine linkage or a methyleneamine linkage formed by the condensation between the formyl group in the polyformyl compound and the amino group in the physiologically active substance, optionally followed by reduction, and (4) at least two radioactive metallic elements of which each is bonded to the chelating compound through a chelating bond.

Abstract: A process for removing halogen gases from a gas stream containing carbon dioxide such as flue gas from an industrial waste incinerator burning chlorinated organic wastes, the process includes seven steps. The first step is to flow fresh absorption liquor to a gas-liquid contactor (such as a column packed with pall rings) the fresh absorption liquor containing water, base and thiosulfate (such as sodium carbonate and sodium thiosulfate). The second step is to flow the gas stream to the gas-liquid contactor. The third step is to contact the fresh absorption liquor and the gas stream in the gas-liquid contactor to form a contacted gas stream and a contacted absorption liquor. The fourth step is to flow the contacted gas stream from the gas-liquid contactor to form an exhaust gas stream from the process. The fifth step is to flow the contacted absorption liquor from the gas-liquid contactor to form used absorption liquor.
