Patent number: 4829004Abstract: An insert for a roller bottle of the type used in cell culture for vaccine manufacture is formed of a polymeric resilient material whereby it can be bent or rolled so that it can pass through the opening of the roller bottle. Once the insert is inside the bottle, it is released so that its resilient characteristic causes it to unbend or unroll. The insert is wider than the diameter of the roller bottle, and therefore it is urged against the interior wall of the roller bottle. Apertures and/or notches are provided in the insert to increase the turbulence of a fluid and to decrease the fluidic shear forces in the roller bottle as it is rotated in conventional operation. A significant increase in productivity is achieved because particles, which may be microcarrier beads, are maintained in suspension, and prevented from sinking to the bottom of the fluid medium where cells cannot grow. The roller bottle system is thereby transformed into a microcarrier suspension culture system.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1987Date of Patent: May 9, 1989Assignees: The University of Michigan, Solohill Engineering Inc.Inventors: James Varani, David E. Patent number: 4826499Abstract: An integral disposable absorbent garment, such as a disposable diaper or an incontinent brief, having a chassis means and an improved fastening system in a waist portion of the chassis means. The fastening system comprises a laterally displaceable elastic member, which is affixed to the chassis means, and a fastening means, such as a refastenable tape, joined to said elastic member. Thus, the fastening means, rather than being affixed to the garment in a fixed relation, is instead laterally displaceable in relation to the balance of the garment. The improved fastening system provides the garment with a better fit, improved adjustability, and the capability of being able to be pulled on or off the wearer without unfastening.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1987Date of Patent: May 2, 1989Assignee: The Proctor & Gamble CompanyInventor: Nicholas A. Patent number: 4823865Abstract: A turbulator construction for a heat exchanger. The turbulator is fabricated from a single sheet of flat metal which is bent in the form of a double helix. When disposed in a heat exchanger tube, the turbulator defines a pair of helical passages. The upstream end of the turbulator is flat and extends diametrically across the tube to divide the tube into a pair of inlet passages of substantially equal area. Each inlet passage communicates with one of the helical passages. In one form of the invention, the turbulator is formed from an elongated rectangular sheet of metal and in the bent condition, the peripheral edges of the helix are spaced from the tube to provide gaps therebetween. In a second form of the invention, the helix is formed from an elongated sheet with the side edges formed of a series of interconnected convex edge portions. In the bent condition, the curved edge portions conform to the inner surface of the tube, so that there is no appreciable gap between the helix and the tube.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 1988Date of Patent: April 25, 1989Assignee: A. Patent number: 4817582Abstract: A gas-fired combination steam and dry oven has an oven cavity that is heated by heat exchange from one or more fire tubes and a boiler that is located outside the oven cavity and is heated by heat exchange from one or more other fire tubes. Both the oven and boiler fire tube heat exchangers employ natural draft gas burners. The combination oven can be operated as a forced-air convection oven, a forced-flow convection oven circulating superheated steam, or a steamer circulating saturated steam. Sensors in the oven supply information to a microprocessor that controls the gas burners to maintain an oven temperature within 5.degree. F. or less. Sensors of the level of water in the boiler assure that the water level stays within predetermined limits. Tray stops keep foods and the trays containing them away from the walls of the oven to permit free circulation of air, saturated steam, or superheated steam.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1987Date of Patent: April 4, 1989Assignee: Delaware Capital Formation, Inc.Inventors: G.
