  • Patent number: 4811524
Abstract: A cylinder grinding machine with devices for tracing and dimensional and surface checking has a front bench provided with rests for supporting the workpiece and a head and a counterhead for rotation and longitudinal restraint of the workpiece. A rear bench supports a carriage longitudinally movable on it parallel to the axis of the workpiece. On the carriage there is a wheelhead movable perpendicularly to the axis of the piece bearing the grinding tool. A third bench is rigid with the front bench and is located opposite the second bench. On the third bench a measuring carriage supporting more instruments tracing the dimensions and surface of the workpiece, operating both in contact and without contact with the workpiece, is movable. The carriage is provided with motorized devices which are autonomous and independent of the movements of the carriage supporting the wheelhead, it being possible for the measurement by such instruments to be carried out at the same time as machining and independently of it.

  • Patent number: 4777769
Abstract: Automated grinding is performed using a tracking means having a sufficient field of view to locate edges to be processed and using a high resolution profiler in order to provide grinding information for calculation of the amount of material which should be removed from the workpiece. Those sections of the workpiece not requiring additional grinding may be traversed at a high speed in order to improve productivity. A process control computer receives grinding information from the tracking means and high resolution profiler and uses it to control a manipulator to adjust the travel speed of the grinder, force with which a grinder is applied, position of the grinder, and/or speed of rotation of the grinder in order to remove the correct amount of material from a workpiece. The technique is especially advantageous in removing excess material, burrs, nicks, chips and other minor irregularities in workpieces. A second profiler may be used to check that the grinder has properly ground portions of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4773187
Abstract: A numerically controlled grinding machine provided with an angular type grinding wheel and a numerical controller for controlling the feed of grinding wheel based upon a control signal from a measuring head which measures the diameter of a cylindrical side of a workpiece. The grinding wheel is moved along an inclined path to grind the cylindrical side and a radially inner portion of the shoulder of the workpiece, simultaneously. In response to the control signal from the measuring head, the feeding of the grinding wheel is stopped. Then, the numerical controller detects the difference between a target position and a actual position of the grinding wheel along an axis of a work spindle. Further, the numerical controller compensates another target position to grind the radially outer portion of the shoulder for the difference. Thereafter, the grinding wheel is moved to the compensated target position so as to grind the radially outer portion of the shoulder.

  • Patent number: 4769954
Abstract: An improved structure for supporting and positioning a planar glass workpiece within a glass grinding apparatus is disclosed. Three radially extending carriage assemblies are provided between a lower pan and an upper supporting platform. Each of the carriage assemblies extends radially outwardly from a central drive shaft connected to the supporting platform to the periphery of the lower pan. The radial inner ends of the carriage assemblies are rotatably supported about the drive shaft, while the radial outer ends are carried on respective motor assemblies connected to a gear formed on a lower pan. Energization of the motor assemblies causes the associated carriage assemblies to pivot relative to the lower pan. Each of the carriage assemblies also carries a locator cylinder assembly thereon. The locator cylinder assemblies are movable radially inwardly and outwardly throughout the length of the corresponding carriage assemblies by means of the associated motor assemblies.

  • Patent number: 4750296
Abstract: A grinding tool is provided that is especially designed for the accurate and efficient grinding of overhead camshaft motor valve clearance discs. The tool hereof includes a tool outer casing adapted for retainment in the clamping fixture of a grinding machine, a disc retaining head rotatably carried by the housing, and an axially aligned release rod shiftably carried within the retaining head and housing. In operation, the disc is retained by a lubricated force fit within a retaining head counterbore, and the grinding tool positions the disc in grinding contact with the generally planar grinding surface of a rotatable grinding wheel. The rotational mounting of the retaining head within the tool housing allows for rotation of the disc relative to the grinding wheel surface, thereby enhancing the even grinding of the disc.

  • Patent number: 4736547
Abstract: An abrading element for mass finishing of workpieces such as vibratory finishing comprises an elongated metallic rod of generally circular or other curvilinear cross section with serrations extending over substantially its entire periphery along its elongated axis. The serrations provide cutting edges along their outer surfaces and recesses therebetween. The metal of the rod is hardened at least in the portion adjacent the surface to provide hardened cutting edges and a wear resistant surface. The abrading elements are conveniently formed by severing rod or wire stock in the desired length and rolling or otherwise forming the desired serrations therein, after which the abrading elements may be hardened.
