  • Patent number: 6846869
Abstract: A method for making an article by cold compaction molding. The method comprises compacting a resin composition comprising high molecular weight and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (HMW-PE and UHMW-PE, respectively) homopolymer, copolymer, and/or blend and an inorganic acid scavenger at a temperature below the softening temperature of the composition. An article prepared in accordance with the claimed method shows lower corrosion test data compared to articles prepared from virgin HMW-PE and UHMW-PE, and an improved cold compaction strength compared to articles prepared using resins containing metal soaps.

  • Patent number: 6843951
Abstract: The method of making a dental device or the like which involves starting with a pattern of the device to be made, closely surrounding that pattern with a settable material to form a unit with the pattern, separating the unit and removing the pattern therefrom, filling the thus produced space with settable material of the type desired for the ultimate device, setting that material and removing the set material constituting the device to be made, and in particular utilizing a retention device to enclose the settable materials and other contents. The process is particularly useful when the device is to be made of a light-sensitive material, in which case the retention device and the first-used settable material are light-transmissive and the retention device preferably focuses light on the material to be set.

  • Patent number: 6838024
Abstract: The invention relates to a simplified production process with which it is possible to obtain carbon blocks, in particular anodes intended for aluminium production using the Hall-Héroult electrolysis process, which have high thermal shock resistance. This process comprises a grain size distribution adjustment operation of a carbon aggregate which includes: a) separating an initial ungraded carbon aggregate AC into a first fraction F1 made up of grains whose sizes are smaller than X, and into a second fraction F2 made up of grains whose sizes are X or greater, X lying between 0.2 and 2 mm; b) crushing B1 the first fraction F1 and part P1 of the second fraction F2 such as to obtain a powder F comprising a controlled proportion of ultra-fine grains; c) mixing the remaining part P2 of fraction F2 and said powder F in proportions with which it is possible to obtain crude carbon blocks whose so-called “Gr/S” ratio between the proportion PGr of grains larger than 0.

  • Patent number: 6827896
Abstract: Cure and consolidation of a viscous thermoplastic resin, especially one that softens and melts at a high temperature, is improved by assisting autoclave pressurized momentum transport for compaction of the composite using high frequency, low amplitude acoustic vibration within the resin. The vibration induces shear thinning in the resin which promotes resin flow, achieves filling or collapse of voids, and assists consolidation of the composite preform.

  • Patent number: 6824640
Abstract: A method is devised for continuous fabrication of thin membrane gloved enclosures in which a folded membrane ribbon is closed along the opposed longitudinal edges by a reversible closure comprising an interlocking set of beads. The ribbon is then repetitively stamped by a heated filament in the shape of a joined string of gloved enclosure and the interlocked beads are then separated, folded over to overlie the gaps formed and a second severing operation then parts the individual enclosures. In this manner a cuff is formed that can then be extended on top of an article grasped.

  • Patent number: 6814907
Abstract: An extrusion apparatus employs a method for controlling the output flow rate of a liquifier. The apparatus includes an extrusion head which moves along a predetermined tool path at an extrusion head velocity. The extrusion head carries a liquifier. The liquifier receives a solid element of a modeling material, heats the modeling material, and outputs a flow of the modeling material at an output flow rate. A material advance mechanism is employed to supply the solid element of modeling material to the liquifier at an input rate which controls the output flow rate. In order to control the output flow rate, an extrusion head velocity profile is determined based on the tool path. The input rate of modeling material to the liquifier is then controlled to produce an output flow rate of modeling material from the liquifier that is proportional to a current extrusion head velocity corresponding to the extrusion head velocity profile.

  • Patent number: 6814911
Abstract: A method and apparatus for incorporating an additive material into a fibrous web to be bonded into an elongated porous element by heating the fibers in a confined forming die with a heating medium adapted to bond the fibers to each other at spaced points of contact. An additive material is admixed with the heating medium and then the web of fibers is contacted with the heating medium/additive material mixture whereby the heating medium simultaneously carries the additive material into the fibrous web and heats the fibers to bond them into the porous element. The apparatus includes an adjustable venturi assembly through which the heating medium passes to create a pressure gradient adapted to aspirate a quantity of additive material and entrain a metered quantity of same in the heating medium.

  • Patent number: 6811736
Abstract: A method of producing a plastic product having a microstructured surface (3a), utilizing an arrangement for moulding plastic products. Said arrangement has at least two mould parts (2, 3) movable towards and away from each other, a predetermined volume of a viscous polymerizable plastic material (9) being supplied to a cavity formed between the mould parts, after which polymerization of the plastic material occurs. After said polymerization of the plastic material (9′), the mould parts are caused to move apart from each other thereby allowing removal of a finished plastic product the outer shape of which conforms to the shape of the cavity produced by the mould parts. Said viscous polymerizable plastic material (9) is supplied to the cavity (6) around a hole (10a) pertaining to the finished plastic product, and said viscous plastic material is distributed in a direction from said hole (10a) towards the peripheral edge area of the plastic product.

  • Patent number: 6811733
Abstract: A method for forming a plurality of composite parts via resin transfer molding in a single molding cycle. The method includes the steps of using a mold having first and second mold members that cooperate to house a plurality of shims and placing a plurality of preform workpiece into the mold cavity such that at least one of the shims is disposed between each of an adjacent pair of the preform workpieces. A liquid resin is then injected into the mold cavity and subsequently cured to thereby form a cured workpiece matrix that is composed of a plurality of semi-finished composite parts and at least one shim separating the plurality of semi-finished composite parts from one another.

  • Patent number: 6808665
Abstract: In a thermoforming system for masked polymer substrate sheets, a temperature resistant, non-stick coating is applied to a sheet of a polymer substrate material. The coated sheet is positioned on a flexible platen positioned over a mold having a predetermined shape. Heat is applied until the polymer reaches a thermoforming temperature and softens, whereupon the platen is lowered to stretch over and cover the mold. When the sheet begins to conform to the mold, the heat is withdrawn and a second platen is lowered over the sheet to urge it into conformance with the mold. The temperature resistant coating can be applied over an existing polymer film masking, and rapidly cures to form a non-stick surface which prevents adhesion of the masked polymer sheet to the platen surfaces.
