  • Patent number: 4175838
Abstract: An electro-optic device comprising a transparent conductive layer and an electrochromic layer applied thereon together constituting an electrode, a counter-electrode spaced from said electrode and an intermediate electrolyte; the electrolyte containing a reductant capable of forming, during operation of the device, an electrochemical couple whose potential is more anodic than the oxidation potential of the electrochromic layer to prevent an increase of the potential during bleaching of the electrochromic layer markedly reducing deterioration of the electrolyte.

  • Patent number: 3960753
Abstract: Liquid crystal compositions compositions and liquid crystal thermometric articles, radiation sensors, and optical display devices comprised of a nematic liquid crystal solvent which is effectively transparent to radiation of near ultraviolet and visible wavelengths and a fluorescent solute whose visible fluorescent intensity varies with the phase or orientation of the liquid crystal solvent are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 3960751
Abstract: An electro-optical element comprising a nematic liquid crystal composition and at least one compound represented by the formula: ##SPC1##Wherein R is an alkyl radical having from 4 to 20 carbon atoms.Said compounds are pleochroic dyes having a special function which differs from hitherto known dyes in their interaction with nematic liquid crystal molecules. The electro-optical element makes it possible to obtain a liquid crystal display device which exhibits the desired figure in color differing from background colors.

  • Patent number: 3957658
Abstract: Certain fluorocarbon surfactants combined with certain silicone surfactants provide mixtures that reduce the surface tension of water to 19 dynes or less per centimeter, and when foamed are particularly effective in fighting fires involving lighter-than-water hydrophobic liquids. Mixtures are further improved with certain other surfactants and use less of the fluorocarbon surfactants to provide fire fighting effectiveness of prior art compositions which do not contain silicone surfactants. Hydrophilic resins and sequestering agents can also be contained in the mixtures.

  • Patent number: 3954663
Abstract: A process comprising extracting the blood of horseshoe crabs (Limulina) into an isotonic buffer solution containing an agent which inhibits the agglutination of amebocyte, separating the amebocyte from said solution, breaking the amebocyte, and recovering Limulina lysate, which is characterized in that methyl derivatives of xanthine such as theophyline, theobromine, or caffeine, or their salts, are used as the amebocyte's agglutination-inhibiting agent is disclosed.
