Patent number: 4586927Abstract: An irrigation sleeve for colostomy patients is adapted such that it can be selectively and removeably attached to any one of a plurality of different snap-on attachments, such as an irrigation attachment or a rinsing or flushing attachment. The sleeve is basically funnel-shaped so that it may more effectively direct the flow of irrigating fluid and waste material therethrough. The sleeve has an opening adapted to receive a stoma of a colostomy patient and an opening adapted to receive one of the attachments. The opening for the attachments can be moved out of alignment with the opening for the stoma in order to inhibit soiling of the attachment by irrigating fluid and waste material discharged from the stoma without requiring the attachment to be removed from the sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1981Date of Patent: May 6, 1986Assignee: E. Patent number: 4326518Abstract: A separable integral donor connector with an improved clamping mechanism for use with flexible blood collection tubing is disclosed. The device is positioned in line with the blood tubing between a phlebotomy needle and the collection bag. Separation of the device is accomplished by manipulation and breaking of a thin frangible ring area and drawing the sections of the device apart. This separation exposes an internally-mounted needle that may be used for penetration of sample collection tube closures and subsequent collection of blood samples. The present embodiment of this invention includes improved manually-operated clamping jaws that are flexibly biased away from the blood tubing. Clamping jaws of differing lengths are disclosed which, when engaged, overlap and cause an area of tubing to be collapsed into a distinctive, S-shaped configuration which crimps and more effectively seals the tubing against blood flow.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1980Date of Patent: April 27, 1982Assignee: Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc.Inventor: Ronald A. Patent number: 4306573Abstract: A growing tobacco stream is formed at the underside of a foraminous belt conveyor and is transported past two trimming devices to be converted into a rod-like filler which is thereupon draped into cigarette paper and severed to yield discrete plain cigarettes which are united with filter plugs to form filter cigarettes of unit length or double unit length. The resistance of successive identical sections of the filler to axial and/or transverse flow of air therethrough is monitored, and the resulting signals are used to adjust the second trimming device when the monitored resistance deviates from a desired value. The envelopes of filter plugs on successive filter cigarettes are perforated by a laser which is adjustable by signals denoting deviations of the mass of tobacco per unit length of the filler from a preselected value, deviations of the resistance of filter plugs to axial flow of air therethrough from a preselected value and/or deviations of the permeability of cigarette paper from a preselected value.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1978Date of Patent: December 22, 1981Assignee: Hauni-Werke K/rber & Co. Patent number: 4305409Abstract: A cigarette making machine includes at least one transfer wheel for transferring the filler stream onto the wrapper web, and air guide vanes extending in approximately tangential directions towards the transfer wheel. As a result, the vanes arrest any particles of tobacco which fly off the wheel, and air streams induced by the suction in the wheel tend to return the particles to the wheel with a forward component of motion.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1979Date of Patent: December 15, 1981Assignee: Molins LimitedInventors: Derek H. Patent number: 4300559Abstract: Blood-compatible, chlorine-free polymers such as a flexible, non-toxic, sterilizable polyester plastic formulation may contain from 5 to 70 percent by weight of a blood-extractable plasticizer such as di-2-ethylhexylphthalate, to cause blood which is stored in contact with the polymer to exhibit a surprisingly low hemolysis rate when compared with corresponding polymers which are free of the plasticizer. Accordingly, blood bags, tubing and other medical blood-contacting devices may be advantageously made from these polymers.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1980Date of Patent: November 17, 1981Assignee: Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Henry M. Patent number: 4294246Abstract: A metering apparatus for controlling the administration of intravenous fluids (IV) having a flow passage within a housing connectable to a source of IV fluid and to a delivery tube terminating at an administration needle. The flow passageway incorporates a valve seat. A metering pin is axially moveable within the passage and relative to the valve seat. The metering pin defines a flow passageway and a variable area flow notch which are positionable relative to the valve seat to regulate flow from a purge to a flow blocking position. In the preferred embodiment, positioning of the metering pin is accomplished by a cam engaging a portion of the pin forming a cam follower. The cam is manually adjustable by a dial on the device to accomplish accurate, repeatable and continuous flow adjustment over the full range. In other embodiments, the pin may be adjusted relative to the valve seat by a rack and pinion arrangement and other mechanical equivalents.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1979Date of Patent: October 13, 1981Assignee: Master Medical CorporationInventors: Jerry L. Patent number: 4292973Abstract: An apparatus for refrigeration treatment is used in cryomedical treatment for applying gas of extremely low temperature onto an affected portion of the flow patient. In a system of the apparatus, there are a liquefied gas source, a temperature controlled bath and a conduit pipe having a cup at its end to be placed over the affected portion. The bath contains a liquid medium of high specific heat in which are immersed a mixing cylinder and an evaporator which are mutually connected with a plurality of tubes. The liquefied gas supplied from the source to the evaporator is vaporized and flowed through the tubes to the cylinder where the vaporized gas is mixed with a liquefied gas directly supplied from the source at an optimum gas temperature.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1980Date of Patent: October 6, 1981Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Kurio-MedikaruInventors: Toshima Yamauchi, Sadao Nogami, Kengi Sawada, Jyunichiro Moriya, Hiroomi Sawada, Keizou Kobayashi

Patent number: 4282863Abstract: The disclosure is of a method for preparing a stable, dry-packaged, sterile, nutrient composition which upon addition of sterile, pyrogen-free water is suitable for intravenous administration to a mammal, including a human. The method comprises providing the nutrients in a specific dry form and state of physical purity acceptable for intravenous administration, sealing the nutrients in a particular type of container adapted to receive and dispense sterile fluids and subjecting the container and its sealed contents to a sterilizing, nondestructive dose of ionizing radiation. The method results in a packaged, sterile nutrient composition which may be dissolved by the addition of sterile, pyrogen-free, water. The resulting aqueous intravenous solution may be safely administered to a mammal, including a human, in need of nutrient therapy.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1978Date of Patent: August 11, 1981Inventors: Myron A.
