    Abstract: A radio communication unit employs passive devices and a loop filter to receive a coded frequency modulated wakeup or synchronization signal that enables the receiving radio unit and initiates communications. The loop filter simultaneously tracks phase and frequency and provides smoothing to enable synchronization with weak signals (e.g., signals that typically do not enable a standard phase locked loop (PLL) to lock). In particular, when the communication unit is in a standby mode, the passive circuits of the present invention are receiving energy from a unit antenna and initially function as a phase locked loop (PLL) to lock onto an incoming signal. The wakeup or synchronization signal includes a series of tones at different frequencies, where the specific sequence is prearranged between the transmitting and receiving units. When each tone in the sequence has been detected by the receiving unit, the unit is enabled for communications.

    Abstract: A method and system for communication within an energy-transmission-limited environment. RF transceivers throughout the site are located site-wide such that areas within the site in which communications are desired are within range of at least one of the RF transceivers. At each location RF transceivers are connected to a control unit. The control unit provides power to the transceivers and allows bi-directional communication of audio/voice and/or digital information. The control units may be networked to each other using standard network type category-5 or equivalent cables and may communicate to one another via the network connection. The control units may also be networked via an alternating current powerline by using an alternating current modem. The transceiver of the present invention utilizes single sideband modulators to modulate voice and/or digital signals. The signals are demodulated and filtered at a receiving end of the transceiver. A comb filter attenuates noisy signals with drifting harmonics.

If no broadcast exists on the user-selected channel, the broadcast receiver displays a message that there is no corresponding broadcast on the display device. By viewing, during the channel selection, the displayed image of the program stored previously, the user can ascertain whether or not the channel being selected is the same channel as the user desires to view. If the channel is not the desired channel, the user can provide a second channel selection command while the preceding channel selection is performed. This permits the user to select a desired channel quickly.
