  • Patent number: 6101398
Abstract: An interface between a dual mode mobile station and a piece of data terminal equipment supports both a logical digital interface and a logical analog interface, with the analog interface passing through a modem. At set-up of either a mobile originated or mobile terminated data/fax call, a supporting dual mode communications network determines whether a digital traffic channel is available on an air interface. If so, the channel is allocated to the mobile station, and data/fax communication with the data terminal equipment occurs using the logical digital interface. Otherwise, an analog voice channel is allocated, and the data/fax communication with the data terminal equipment occurs using the logical analog interface and modem. Within the supporting network, data/fax communications via the digital traffic channel are routed through an interworking functionality that terminates a radio link protocol utilized for communicating over the digital air interface.

  • Patent number: 6097938
Abstract: A system and method that uses an advanced positioning system in combination with a cellular communication network to improve the performance of the network is disclosed. The system is capable of receiving an identification number for a mobile unit as well as a location code. In order to determine if the mobile unit is a fraudulent user of the cellular communication network, the system compares the location code with a previously received location code. Since there are natural physical constraints on how quickly a mobile unit can move from one location to another, the system can thereby determine if there are two mobile units using the same identification number. If so, then one is likely a fraudulent user. In addition, the system is capable of assisting the mobile unit by providing the location code to a third party. This is especially beneficial for emergency dispatcher services since, due to the very nature of mobile units, the user of the mobile unit may not know his precise location.

  • Patent number: 6088573
Abstract: The invention provides a transmission power control apparatus for a mobile radio satellite communication system which allows frame synchronization maintenance and synchronization acquisition of a receiving station and optimum transmission power control with a simple construction which does not effect complicated control. The transmission power control apparatus includes a transmission power control loop provided in each of a gateway station and a terminal/mobile station for controlling a transmission power of the station. The transmission level during transmission is monitored and compared with a preset transmission level to change over an average time for sampling of the error between the transmission levels to vary the response speed of the transmission power control loop. When the channel for current use is to be changed over from a signalling channel to a communication channel, the transmission power is controlled so that there is no trouble for continuous synchronization of the reception side.

  • Patent number: 6073035
Abstract: The present invention includes a method and an apparatus for reducing power consumption in a wireless telephone. The wireless telephone is programmed to enter a reduced power mode for a sleep interval of time upon failing to access a base station. Additionally, the overall base station accessing process is considerably shortened by only searching once through the sequence of available carrier spectrums (e.g., digital and analog carriers for multi-mode mobile stations) before entering the reduced power mode. Also, when searching through a code division multiple access (CDMA) channel, the present invention includes searching only once through all pseudo-random number (PN) code timing locations when searching for a base station.

  • Patent number: 6067460
Abstract: When a mobile station (10) is in a DCCH camping state it monitors its assigned page frame. After making RSSI and possibly also Bit Error Rate/Word Error Rate (BER/WER) measurements the mobile station monitors the rate of change of the RSSI. If the rate of change is small and remains so, the mobile station is assumed to be in a stationary state. After determining that it is stationary, the mobile station may give an audible alert and/or display a message to request the user to confirm that the mobile station is (and will remain) stationary. When in the stationary state the mobile station inhibits making neighbor channel measurements for DCCH reselection. The mobile station continues to monitor its assigned page frame within an assigned digital control channel and to measure its own channel RSSI and possibly also the BER/WER. If these values subsequently indicate that the mobile station is no longer stationary, the mobile station immediately resumes all neighbor channel measurements.

  • Patent number: 6032023
Abstract: A system and method of using two-way paging to establish communications with a mobile party having a Personal Telephone Number. The mobile party is equipped with a two-way pager which the party may use to provide call control. The pager is periodically queried by a network and/or paging service to determine whether or not the pager is reachable. If the pager becomes unreachable, and thereafter a call is placed to the party's Personal Telephone Number, the network routes the call to a default station. If the pager is reachable, any one of a number of alternative call routing procedures may be invoked including: registration type routing, call-by-call routing, revertive calling, call examination routing, and subsequent routing. In one possible embodiment, a Customer Routing Point is used to store the pager status along with other call routing information, and a Network Control Point is used to carry out the appropriate routing procedure.
