Patent number: 7569995Abstract: An apparatus and method for containing plasma and forming a Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) magnetic topology are described in which plasma ions are contained magnetically in stable, non-adiabatic orbits in the FRC. Further, the electrons are contained electrostatically in a deep energy well, created by tuning an externally applied magnetic field. The simultaneous electrostatic confinement of electrons and magnetic confinement of ions avoids anomalous transport and facilitates classical containment of both electrons and ions. In this configuration, ions and electrons may have adequate density and temperature so that upon collisions ions are fused together by nuclear force, thus releasing fusion energy. Moreover, the fusion fuel plasmas that can be used with the present confinement system and method are not limited to neutronic fuels only, but also advantageously include advanced fuels.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2006Date of Patent: August 4, 2009Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Norman Rostoker, Michl Binderbauer

Patent number: 7554499Abstract: A radome uses traditional continuous heating wires mixed with detuned dipoles between heating wires and can be placed at any chosen distance from an array antenna or FSS. The continuous heating wires add a reactive component to the incident field phase, which is effectively cancelled out by the detuned dipoles which provide a capacitive component. The orthogonal components of the incident field are transmitted with very small losses over a wide number of scan angles. These heating and detuned dipoles can be printed on low loss dielectric materials. In addition, the printed elements of this radome can be scaled to operate over a chosen frequency band.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2006Date of Patent: June 30, 2009Assignee: Harris CorporationInventors: Benedikt A. Patent number: 7545353Abstract: It is a problem to provide a light-emitting device capable of obtaining a constant brightness without being affected by deterioration in an organic light-emitting layer or temperature change, and of making desired color display. The lowering in OLED brightness due to deterioration is reduced by causing the OLED to emit light while keeping constant the current flowing through the OLED instead of causing the OLED to emit light while keeping constant the OLED drive voltage. Namely, OLED brightness is controlled not by voltage but by current thereby preventing against the change in OLED brightness due to deterioration of OLED. Specifically, the drain current Id of a transistor for supplying a current to the OLED is controlled in a signal line drive circuit thereby keeping constant the drain current Id without relying upon the value of a load resistance.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2006Date of Patent: June 9, 2009Assignee: Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co., Ltd.Inventor: Jun Koyama

Patent number: 7541994Abstract: A radio-frequency-device test range (the Refractive Compact Range) includes a physical space having a source zone for placing an antenna or array of antennas, and a test zone for placing a sensor or other device to be tested. A lens and an apodizer are placed in the physical space between the source zone and the test zone. The lens serves to collimate radiated energy emanating from the antenna toward the test zone. The lens may have a surface treatment, such as an anti-reflective coating or a surface pattern, on one or both surfaces. The apodizer functions to keep energy from diffracting off the edge of the lens and getting into the field of view (the test zone). The sensor or other device to be tested may be placed on a moveable mount to allow it to be moved, to simulate relative movement of the device and a radio frequency source, such as radiated by an antenna.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2006Date of Patent: June 2, 2009Assignee: Raytheon CompanyInventors: Dean R.
