  • Patent number: 4425696
Abstract: A method of making a new high performance heat transfer tube for use in an evaporator of a refrigeration system is disclosed. According to this novel method, a grooved mandrel is placed inside an unformed tube and a tool arbor having a tool gang thereon is rolled over the external surface of the tube. The unformed tube is pressed against the mandrel to form at least one internal rib on the interior of the tube. Simultaneously, at least one external fin convolution is formed on the exterior of the tube. The external fin convolution has depressed sections above the internal rib where the tube is forced into the grooves of the mandrel to form the rib. A smooth roller-like disc on the tool arbor is rolled over the external surface of the tube after the initial formation of the external fin and internal rib. The resulting heat transfer tube has an exterior with a subsurface channel consisting of interconnected cavities and subsurface passages.

  • Patent number: 4423544
Abstract: A method of making a composite gasket. A composite gasket is formed from an annular coiled strip of heat-resistant core material having a metallic tanged core and a facing layer, as of a mica-based material, integrated with the strip. The coil is placed in a first die and axially compressed under a relatively low pressure into a preform having a plurality of crevices in its face. The preform and a temperature-resistant sealing material, such as expanded graphite, are placed in a second die and the graphite and preform are axially compressed under high pressure to integrate the sealing material with the preform and to mechanically interlock the sealing material with crevices in the surface of the core material. The preform and sealing material are substantially deformed during the second axial compression to provide an improved composite gasket.

  • Patent number: 4423542
Abstract: A panel of thin bendable material is provided and includes one marginal portion thereof for disposition adjacent the worn side of a journal bore in a clock frame plate with the panel disposed parallelly in juxtaposition with one side of the plate. The aforementioned marginal portion of the panel includes a narrow elongated lengthwise outwardly projecting tongue disposed generally normal to the panel for reception in the worn side of the bore. The tongue is concavo-convex in cross section with the convex side opposing and seated against the worn side of the bore and the concave side of the tongue opposing the side of the bore remote from the worn side thereof. The tongue, therefore, defines an insert for renewing the worn side of the bore and against which the corresponding clock component shaft portion may be journaled.

  • Patent number: 4419800
Abstract: A cage for a frusto-conical roller bearing is formed of a punched flat material strip so that an elongated bar extends along one side of the punched strip with a number of bars extending transversely outwardly from the elongated bar with the ends of these bars being free. As a result of the punching step a number of windows are formed closed on three sides but open on the fourth side opposite the elongated bar. The transversely extending bars are bent out of the plane of the elongated bar. When the punched strip is free into a ring the free ends of the transversely extending bars are located on a circle having a different diameter than the diameter into which the elongated bar is rolled. Another bar is rolled into a ring and is connected to the free ends of the transversely extending bars.

  • Patent number: 4418463
Abstract: A method of fabricating a composite structure comprising wire mesh and concrete. The longitudinal wires of a section of such wire mesh are formed together into a repeating sinuous pattern perpendicular to the transverse wires, so that the alternate transverse wires together comprise two groups each in one of two parallel spaced apart planes. A flat section of similar mesh is placed against each of these groups. Each of the flat sections of mesh and the juxtaposed group of transverse wires of the formed mesh are in turn placed together to be cured, into first and second layers of wet concrete mixes in suitable forms to produce the composite concrete-steel network structure. The relatively light weight structure may be utilized for floor, ceiling or roof slabs, and for column load bearing wall panels.

  • Patent number: 4417380
Abstract: A method of securing a bearing either bushing, roller or ball bearing and a spacer or fitting into a soft non-ferrous material such as aluminum and materials of that hardness. A bearing of this invention containing an annular groove and adjacent forming shoulder or spacer, at least 1/2 a millimeter greater in diameter than the body of the bushing is inserted into a predrilled hole. A metal ring is formed in the annular groove as the shoulder is pressed into the parent material. This metal ring being a part of the parent material and being packed into the annular groove prevents retraction of the bearing or spacer during operation by its diameter being greater than the annular groove in the bearing. The material in the annular groove is of a lesser diameter than the body of the bearing and fitting and interfers with axial movement. The shoulder of the bearing or fitting has longitudinal grooves around its circumference.

  • Patent number: 4416044
Abstract: The method of casting a plate type recuperative heat exchange envelope that encloses a hollow space therein in a single casting operation. A sand core with a heat sensitive binder therein defines the hollow space within the envelope. The sand core is supported by end extensions and lateral protuberances which rest on the sides of a sand mold to provide a space therebetween that is subsequently filled with molten metal to comprise an envelope casting. Lateral openings through the envelope casting produced by the lateral protuberances and end openings produced by the end extensions provide passageways for venting gases produced within the sand core during the casting operation, and after completion of the casting operation the same openings in the envelope assist in the removal of the sand core therefrom. The lateral openings are subsequently plugged while the end openings are maintained open to direct the flow of fluid therethrough.

  • Patent number: 4412372
Abstract: The present invention is a method for the manufacture of bearing rings ruptured along an arrow-shaped partition line for antifriction bearings or similar devices. According to the invention a radial bore is introduced through the middle of the ring transversely of the bearing axis, and in the opposite end faces are introduced V-shaped notches which are displaced in relation to the radial bore in a circumferential direction. The bearing ring is supported on one end and ruptured first on that end by a force directed against the opposite end. The ring is turned over and again ruptured similarly until an arrow-shaped partition line extends from the radial bore to the notches.

  • Patent number: 4411056
Abstract: Steel products having high strength or good drawing or magnetic or electrical properties, requiring levels of carbon or manganese, or both, that are too high to allow rimming action are produced to have the desired properties, in effect, but with a surface condition characteristic of rimmed steel. The method involves pouring an ingot mold 80 to 95% full of molten, rimming steel, then allowing the steel to stand and rim for several minutes while a shell freezes against the mold wall, and thereafter filling the mold while inserting into the molten steel stream additional carbon or manganese, plus any other elements such as P, Al, Cb, V, Cr, Ni, Si or others, so that the core of the ultimately solidified ingot is steel having the above-desired strength or other properties.

  • Patent number: 4403385
Abstract: A process for forming a double wall heat exchanger. A first ductile tube is placed inside of a second ductile tube. The first tube tightly fitting inside of the second tube. The first tube is the inner tube and the second tube is the outer tube. The combination of the outer tube and the inner tube is finned in a finning apparatus. A helical fin is pressure formed on the outer surface of the outer tube and simultaneously a small helical groove is formed on the inside surface of the outer tube which follows the path of the helical path of the helical fin. The internal pressure being applied to the inner tube causes the inner tube to expand and conform to the inside surface and diameter of the outer tube, with a continuous helical protrusion forming which mates with the internal helical groove of the outer tube, but not entirely filling the internal groove. A helical passageway between the inner and outer tubes is thereby formed. Preferably the inner and outer tubes are made of copper.
