    Abstract: A disc memory apparatus allows its magnetic head to reach a target track in a short period of time, wherein address data is recorded on each two-track width corresponding to each of the even-numbered and the odd-numbered tracks; either of two kinds of burst signals is recorded on each one-track width corresponding to each of the even-numbered and the odd-numbered tracks; the address of the record track is detected, based on the result of a comparison of two kinds of burst signals and the first address data, or in addition to this, the detected address data is further offset by the second address data; since the lengths of the servo sector areas required to detect the address data are shortened, the address data of the magnetic head are detected to a higher accuracy using a smaller number of reference signals; and the magnetic head can be moved at a fast speed, thus in a short period of time, resulting in a short seek time.

    Abstract: A protective reflex system for a portab1e computer hard disk initiates protective action before the hard disk suffers the shock of an impact in the event they fall from, for example, a user's lap. A three axis accelerometer is mounted in the portable computer. The output of the accelerometer is continuously monitored by a dedicated processor. In the event of an acceleration event within a preset range of values, the dedicated processor passes a high priority interrupt to the central processing unit of the portable computer and then proceeds to park the disk heads. Alternately, the interrupt routine of the central processing unit may also cause the park operation. In addition to park operation, a brake operation may be performed by either the dedicated processor or the central processing unit.

    Abstract: A disk drive includes at least one reference track having a plurality of sectors which are read and averaged in order to compensate for spindle offset. The disk drive has a head position servo system controls a head position actuator and includes a polyphase optical encoder which is initially calibrated by reference to dark current values and recalibrated periodically by reference to the reference track. Preferably, at least two reference tracks are located at the extremes of the radial displacement of the actuator so that variations in gap dimension between a scale mounted to the actuator and a fixed reticle-mask over a photodetector array of the encoder may be measured and compensated for. The method for initializing the drive and for periodically updating its calibration of the encoder and the head position servo is also described.

The tone code in the disclosed system is generated by a telephone compatible microcircuit system which also includes a microcomputer and software for system controlling purposes.     Abstract: The magnetic tape video playback apparatus for a digital video signal regenerates the sample rate from the playback to operate a counter and detects the video data block numbers to permit an address generator to derive the more significant bits of addresses for a picture memory in which the video data signal is temporarily stored. The counter provides the less significant bits of the write addresses. The separated vertical sync pulses are counted in a second counter to provide time information for storage in a time data memory which is operated in parallel with the picture memory, using the write addresses from the already mentioned address generator. A reference sample rate generator operates a third counter which provides the read out addresses for the picture and time data memories.

    Abstract: In recording systems in which video and audio signals are recorded in tape layers having different depths, a method and apparatus is provided which serves to ensure that the video recording bias for a video signal is always selected and adjusted for optimum results, allowance being made for an audio signal already recorded in the same tracks and for tolerances of the record carrier, the heads and the head amplifier with respect to the playback sensitivity. During recording of the video signal, the video recording bias is varied step-wise. After every change in the video recording bias, a d.c. signal is derived from the playback envelope of the audio signal, the value of the d.c. signal being a measure of the playback amplitude of the audio signal. As soon as the d.c. signal value has reached a predetermined minimum value, the video recording bias is ceased to be changed and the last value of the video recording bias is stored for the next recording process.

    Abstract: There is provided a digital data recording system in which digital data which is encoded by the RLL (Run Length Limited) encoding system in which code "1" does not continue is recorded onto a recording medium in accordance with an NRZL (Non Return to Zero) rule. In this system, the digital data is input, a width of pulse corresponding to code "1" in the input digital data is converted into a pulse of a width larger than the pulse width, and the digital data of the converted pulse width is recorded onto the recording medium. A change amount of the pulse width is made different in accordance with the minimum number of codes "0" arranged between codes "1" and "1" in the digital data. With this system, the error rate of the digital data recorded on the recording medium can be reduced. In the case of the same error rate, the recording density can be improved.
