Abstract: Endophytic microbial strains as biocatalysts isolated from fresh plant samples, compositions, and methods of use thereof to enhance the growth and/or yield of a plant in the presence of reduced synthetic phosphate fertilizers are provided. Endophytic microbial strains serve as biocatalysts to solubilize mineral-P and mineralize organic-P otherwise unavailable to plants for their nutritional phosphate needs. Thus defined, biocatalysts, will serve to replace synthetic phosphate fertilizers. Also provided are materials and methods for inoculating plants with these biocatalysts at carefully selected inoculum densities to reliably reduce the amount of synthetic phosphate fertilizer by 50% thus accomplishing obtaining optimal yields in technically and cost-effective manner.
Abstract: The biological functionality of living microbial spores is modified using phenotypic engineering to endow the resulting modified spores with novel functionality that extends the usefulness of the spores for a variety of practical applications including, for example, sterility testing, the release of active compounds, and cell-based biosensing systems. An embodiment entails engineering Bacillus spores to acquire synthetic new functions that enable the modified spores to sense and rapidly transduce specific germination signals in their surroundings. The newly acquired functions allow the spores to perform, for example, as self-reporters of cellular viability, self-indicating components of cell-based biosensors, and in other analytical systems. Also disclosed are methods for testing adequate sterility of a system by using engineered spores.
Abstract: This invention is about a process of increased Biogas (9) production, with high methane content, in anaerobic biodigestion plants, with production of electric (11) and thermal energy. The process is based upon biotechnologies, hardware and software specifically developed for this aim. One or more Devices for the Acceleration (4) of autochthon methanogenic bacteria multiplication, originally contained in the Organic Wastes (1), collect a portion of the biological material from the Anaerobic Biodigester (3) and, successively, gives it back at a higher rate, with its methanogenic bacteria population remarkably multiplied. The increase and stabilization of the reproduction and nutrition of these bacterial strains allows the increase of the biogas produced in the Anaerobic Biodigester (3) along with the percentage of methane contained in this very Biogas (9).

Abstract: A method for treating an oil-containing medium including oil or grease or both oil and grease includes the steps of combining algae with an oil-containing medium and allowing the algae to engulf or uptake at least a portion of the oil or grease in the oil-containing medium. A mixture for treating oil or grease or both oil and grease includes an oil-containing medium including oil or grease or both oil and grease and phagotrophic algae that engulf or uptake at least a portion of the oil or grease in the oil-containing medium.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the microbiological field, and particularly relates to a Leclercia adcarboxglata biocontrol strain efficiently inhibiting production of aflatoxins by Aspergillus flavus. The Leclercia adcarboxglata biocontrol strain Wt16 was deposited at China Center for Type Culture Collection (CCTCC) on Jun. 13, 2017, and the accession number of the strain is CCTCC No. M2017331. The Leclercia adcarboxglata strain Wt16 is isolated from peanut pods for the first time which can significantly inhibit aflatoxins production by Aspergillus flavus, and also has an extremely good effect on inhibiting aflatoxins production by Aspergillus flavus for peanuts from different sources.

Abstract: The invention pertains to a method for synthesizing a product of interest by culturing a microalgal cell producing the product of interest in the dark in a culture medium comprising an organic acid as a fixed carbon source, wherein the microalgal cell is a facultative heterotroph. The product of interest can be a microalgal biomass, a pigment, terpene, recombinant molecule, biogas, or a precursor thereof. In an embodiment, the culture medium comprises urea as a primary source of nitrogen. In one embodiment, the microalgal cell belongs to the order Chlamydomonadales. A method of identifying and isolating a microalgal cell having a preferred characteristic that is suitable for synthesis of a product of interest is also provided, the method comprising identifying and isolating a non-mutagenized or recombinant microalgal cell from a microalgal culture using a fluorescence activated cell sorting technique and/or a phototaxic response.

Abstract: Compositions and methods are provided for preventing, ameliorating, or treating a disease caused by a species of bacterial genus Vibrio, for example, cholera caused by V. cholerae, the compositions containing two or more strains of lytic bacteriophage that infect and kill Vibrio cells. The bacteriophage are virulent, which replicate intracellularly and lyse and kill the bacteria. Use of two or more strains in a single treatment, as a result of a rate of mutation of the bacteria to simultaneous resistance to all of the bacteriophage to be so low as to be negligible, reduces appearance of phage-resistant bacteria to statistical negligibility. Normal human microbial flora species were not affected. In alternative embodiments of the method and the composition, antibiotic agents or other treatment agents can be administered with a cocktail of the plurality of bacteriophage strains.
