  • Patent number: 5304676
Abstract: Terephthalic acid is produced by oxidation of para xylene, purified in an aqueous phase and recovered by precipitating a purified product from the aqueous phase, the aqueous phase mother liquor is then cooled or evaporated to produce a further less pure precipitate and a second mother liquor and the less pure precipitate is returned to the reaction medium and/or the water of the second mother liquor is used to dissolve the crude solid and/or the second mother liquor is treated to recover water which is used to wash the precipitate recovered from the aqueous solution. The process produces better yields of terephthalic acid, reduces the use of water and reduces problems in the disposal of polluted waste water.

  • Patent number: 5304673
Abstract: A process for recovering dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol from a stream including aqueous ethylene glycol is described. Adding a dispersing agent to the stream renders it filterable, and a subsequent cooling of the stream containing the dispersing agent causes dimethyl terephthalate to precipitate in a form which can be removed by conventional filtration. The precipitated dimethyl terephthalate is of a quality and purity suitable for use in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate. A commercially valuable ethylene glycol stream is also recovered by the process.

  • Patent number: 5302749
Abstract: A method for stabilizing an isocyanate compound by adding 10-5000 ppm of phenol to the isocyanate compound, and also an isocyanate composition so stabilized. In the isocyanate composition stabilized by the above method, coloring due to time-dependent changes and the occurrence of turbidity through self-polymerization are both suppressed so that it shows outstanding storage stability compared with a corresponding isocyanate composition containing a conventional stabilizer.

C. and are subsequently introduced with expansion as a sidestream into a distillation column (4), in the sump of which a pressure of 0.001 to 5 bar and a temperature of 150.degree. to 400.degree. C. are maintained so that the high boiler is kept boiling in the sump, and the decomposition products are simultaneously condensed continuously and selectively at the head of the distillation column. • Patent number: 5278337
Abstract: A process for obtaining a substantially pure enantiomer of an aryl-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acid is described. The process utilizes first an enantiomerically enriched mixture the of aryl-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acid obtained from kinetic resolution, diastereomeric crystallization or asymmetric synthesis processes. This enriched mixture is reacted with a base producing a salt that has the following properties:1) has at least one eutectic point;2) a composition that is not at the eutectic point; and3) a eutectic composition that is closer to the racemic composition than is the eutectic composition of said aryl-substituted carboxylic acid.Substantially pure, enantiomeric salt is separated, leaving a mother liquor comprising the solvent and aryl-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acid enriched in the other enantiomer.
