Abstract: A non-linear signal classifier (26) includes a polynomial expansion unit for expanding signal feature vectors determined by a feature extraction unit (25) for a received signal. The expanded signal feature vectors are each combined with a plurality of signal classification models that are stored in a model memory (76). The signal classification models are each associated with a particular signal type that is recognized by the non-linear signal classifier. A scoring unit (72) generates a score for each of the signal classification models based on the result of the combination. The scores are analyzed by a selection unit (74) which determines which of the signal classification models (i.e., which of the signal types) most likely represents the received signal. Training equipment (60) is also provided for training the non-linear signal classifier (26) to recognize new signal types.

Abstract: A system and method for generating a satellite commanding procedure includes a computer having a central processing unit and a screen display coupled to the computer. The display has a plurality of object-oriented display indicia. An input device is coupled to the computer and is used for entering a plurality of arguments into the computer. A stub generator operating within the computer receives the arguments and generates a stub. A mission tool kit has a plurality of stored commands. A program memory stores the satellite commanding procedure. The computer associates the stub with the procedure steps and stores the procedure steps in program memory. When the satellite commanding procedure is run or tested, a mediator is used to recognize the stub and recall the procedure steps and arguments associated with the screen indicia.
Abstract: A communications system includes a dual mode mobile station and a home base station. Dual mode mobile station is operable selectively in CDMA and analog modes. Home base station includes circuitry for establishing wireless communications with mobile station in the analog mode, and circuitry for establishing communications with a wireline communications system, the base station allowing an exchange of information between mobile station and wireline system in the analog mode.
Abstract: A transmission path selecting apparatus for mobile communication systems susceptible to no such timing trouble as data skipping even where hand-off control is performed is provided. The transmission path selecting apparatus of the base station is connected to radio base stations via wired transmission paths, and has a built-in reception buffer having reception areas provided correspondingly to the wired transmission paths and an extra area. The transmission path selecting apparatus stores data packets received via the wired transmission paths at each reception timing and, if a data packet to be received at a later reception timing than any of the reception timings has been received, stores a copy of the data packet into the extra area. At each reception timing, a data packet corresponding to the reception timing is read out of a reception area or the extra area, and is supplied to a higher-rank apparatus.

Abstract: A radio receiver for receiving audio frequency communications conveyed by a high-frequency carrier and occurring randomly over time. In addition to the tuning circuits, a director, an audio frequency amplifier and a speaker, the receiver includes a controlled switch connected between the detector and the amplifier for disabling or re-enabling the transfer of the audio signal from the detector to the speaker. A filter and second detector set a silence threshold to provide squelch and are arranged to set the silence threshold in accordance with the level of a part of the audio spectrum from the first named detector that contains only noise and is located outside the frequency band of the signal representing the useful audio communication to be received. The receiver is particularly suitable for use in citizen's band equipment.
Abstract: An active mixer circuit, and an associated method, includes a feedback element which increases the linearity of the mixer circuit so that the mixer circuit is operable over a wider dynamic range than typically permitted of conventional, active mixer circuits. The mixer circuit includes a transconductance stage including a pair of transconductance transistors. Signals are applied through both of the transconductance transistors in parallel. The feedback element is coupled to an output side of a first of the transconductance transistors. And, a mixing stage is coupled to an output side of a second of the transconductance transistors.
Abstract: Methods and systems for signalling between a mobile station and a network for requesting supplementary services are disclosed. The network implicitly assumes that signals from a mobile station relate to either a held or active call or that a second action is required after the requested action is performed so that the complexity of the mobile unit can be reduced.

Abstract: An external control unit (ECU) with a reduced keypad is tightly integrated in a voice activated vehicular telephone system which further includes a voice adapter (VA) providing an intelligent interface between the ECU and a portable telephone removably coupled to a portable telephone holder. By taking full advantage of the voice recognition capabilities of the VA, the ECU is able to effectively harness the extensive power of the vehicular telephone system while requiring a very small amount of vehicle space through the combination of an internal microphone and a keypad with a very few number of keys. The remaining keys are specifically chosen for their unique value in the integrated system and are further defined to support multiple mode-specific functions.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for apparatus for controlling communications between a mobile cellular telephone and a cell of a cellular telephone network. The apparatus comprises a serving transceiver for transmitting and receiving communications between the cell and the mobile cellular telephone, a scanner, coupled to an antenna, for selectably scanning the communication channels to measure a characteristic of the signal transmitted from the mobile telephone, and a controller, coupled to the scanner and the serving transceiver, for commanding the antenna based on the measured signal characteristic.
Abstract: A method of directing a call to a mobile telephone in a dual mode cellular satellite communications network is disclosed. An alert signal is transmitted to the mobile telephone using base stations of the cellular network if the mobile telephone is currently registered as active in a cellular network. When the alert signal is received at the mobile telephone, the mobile telephone transmits a response to the cellular network as an acknowledgement. When an acknowledgement is not received by the cellular network within a defined period of time, the cellular network transmits the last known location of the mobile telephone to the satellite earth station. Upon receipt of the last known location of the mobile telephone, the satellite earth station using the last known location determines a satellite antenna beam most likely to be received by the mobile telephone and transmits an alert signal to the mobile telephone via the satellite using the antenna beam.
Abstract: An improvement in the transparency of personal telecommunications over the prior art is achieved by automatically placing a return call from a personal communications unit of a called individual in response to a call from a caller and alerting the called individual to the existence of the call placed to his personal number only upon an indication that the call from the calling telephone remains in progress. In one embodiment of the invention, the called individual associates his personal communications unit with a telephone channel, before his reception of any calls. Should a caller make a call to the called individual's personal calling number, the telephone network causes the transmission of an actuation signal. In response to the actuation signal, the personal communications unit places a call to a predetermined number over a switched telephone network using the aforementioned associated telephone channel.

Abstract: An information distribution and processing system has a broadcast channel for delivering a first set of digital data and a bi-directional channel for allowing a user to obtain additional information. The additional information is stored in a database. In one embodiment of the present invention, the broadcast channel uses a satellite to broadcast the data. In another embodiment of the invention, the bidirectional channel is a telephone system. At predetermined locations of the first set of digital data, linking references are embedded. If desired, the user can select a linking reference and send a request to the database via the bidirectional channel. The database uses the selected linking reference to search for information, and returns the requested information to the user.
Abstract: A mobile satellite system includes at least one satellite and at least one network engineering/systems engineering (NE/SE) system. The NE/SE system performs at least one of the processes of comparing expected traffic loads with capability and availability of space and ground resources in the mobile satellite system; formulating tactical plans to maximize available resources of the at least one satellite, and producing frequency plans for different geographical regions; performing the processes of defining contingency plans for failure situations, including failure in the at least one satellite or a ground-based equipment outage; configuring the mobile satellite system including logical resources and physical components; and configuring communication paths to external organizations operatively connected to the mobile satellite system.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for fraud control in cellular telephone systems. Call records from a switch are scanned to identify a fraudulent cellular phone based on its behavior. An identifier, e.g., a radio frequency (RF) signature, representative of the fraudulent phone is stored in a control channel editor at a cell site. A database of identifiers may comprise a positive validation database storing the identifiers for all valid phones used in the cellular telephone system, or it may be a negative validation database storing the identifiers for known fraudulent phones. A control channel editor intercepts a call origination request transmitted by a phone, and a control processor compares one or more characteristics of the phone transmitting the call origination request to the database of identifiers. The control processor then prevents the call origination request from completing when the comparison indicates that the phone is fraudulent.
