  • Patent number: 4819339
Abstract: The four components of the deviations of a rotary table from an ideal axis of rotation can be obtained by a single measuring method wherein a test body (4) having a plurality of well-defined measurement points is placed on the rotary table (1) and the positions of said measuring points are then determined by means of a coordinate-measuring instrument (3), for each of various angular positions of the rotary table, there being thus a set of ascertained measurement-point coordinates for each of the angular positions of the rotary table. From the sets of measurement-point coordinates, the travel deviations f.sub.a, f.sub.r and f.sub.t of the axis of rotation, and the angle-position deviation p.sub.w are then determined by calculation.

  • Patent number: 4819336
Abstract: For the purposes of determining the orientation of a surveying instrument in a borehole, while compensating for the effects of perturbing magnetic fields associated with magnetized sections of the drill string both above and below the instrument, the inclination angle .theta. and the highside angle .phi. of the instrument are determined, together with two transverse components Bx and By of the local magnetic field as measured at the instrument in the borehole. Additionally either a single component of, or the magnetide of, the true earth's magnetic field at the location of the borehole is ascertained from a look-up table or directly by measurement away from the influence of the drill string. A value .PSI.a for the azimuth angle of the instrument is then determined from the inclination and highside angles, the measured component(s) of the local magnetic field, and only the single component of, or the magnitude of, the true earth's magnetic field.

  • Patent number: 4817293
Abstract: This method for axially aligning an assembly for implanting a parietal probe through an orifice provided in the wall of a reducing-smelting furnace is applicable to an assembly comprising a tightness device equipped with a sealing off member and a tightness member, a chassis fixed to the furnace and supporting the tightness device and a frame equipped with a probe-holding carriage. The assembly further comprises means for adjusting the position of the frame and means for temporarily fixing coaxially to the tightness device first a telescope directed towards the orifice in order to align the axis of the tightness device with the axis of said orifice, and then a light beam source directed onto a target carried by the carriage in order to align the axis of the probe with the axis of the tightness device.

  • Patent number: 4815213
Abstract: In a coordinate measuring machine, apparatus for compensating the sensing means for determining the position of a probe for changes in temperature, where the machine base and the support column for the probe have differing coefficients of thermal expansion. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus of this invention is used to prevent "zero shift" in the Z-direction for a Z-rail. The compensating apparatus is associated either with the support column or Z-rail. The apparatus offsets the greater expansion of the machine component having the greater coefficient of thermal expansion. Typically, the position sensing means for the Z-rail includes an encoder and a scale. In one embodiment, either the encoder or the scale is secured to a mount which is affixed to the column. One element of the mount which extends upwardly from the support column has a coefficient of thermal expansion which is substantially less than that of the aluminum of which the column is composed.

  • Patent number: 4813691
Abstract: A multiple-layered gasket comprising a metallic gasket body including multiple interconnected gasket sections. The multiple-gasket sections are interconnected along opposed peripheral edges in a manner allowing one gasket section to be folded into an overlapping engaging relationship with another gasket section. After the gasket sections are folded upon each other, bendable tabs extending from one or more of the gasket sections are manipulated to maintain the gasket sections in their relative folded condition. The present invention further contemplates a method for making such a multiple-layered gasket.
