    Abstract: Chemicals spilled on porous surfaces may be removed therefrom by applying to the spill site a poultice in the form of a slurry or paste of finely divided particulate material dispersed in a volatile solvent in which the spilled chemical substance is soluble, allowing the solvent to be absorbed into the porous substrate. The poultice is then allowed to dry, thereby effecting a wicking action causing extraction of the chemical substance from the substrate into the poultice.

    Abstract: Alkylamine polyether surface active agent compositions and methods for using are described. The instant compositions are low foaming, and pH sensitive and are generally of the structure: ##STR1## in which (a) R.sub.1 may be hydrogen or alkyl;if R.sub.1 is hydrogen then R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 must be alkyl having a total number of carbon atoms falling in the range of 7 to 23;if R.sub.1 is alkyl, then R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 may be alkyl or hydrogen, the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.1 +R.sub.2 +R.sub.3 +R.sub.4 falling in the range of 7 to 36 (preferably about 10 to 20);(b) The --(C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.m -- segment must be a poly(oxyethylene) homogeneous chain or "block" polymer (i.e., a homopolymer), m having an average value in the range of 1 to 15, preferably 5 to 13; and(c) Y is selected from the group consisting of:(1) homogeneous poly(oxypropylene) chain (PO) "block" polymer or residue (i.e., a homopolymer), of the structure --(C.sub.3 H.sub.6 O).sub.

    Abstract: Method for the recovery of acidic effluent from pulp mill chlorine dioxide generators using the Mathieson or Solvay system. The spent generator acid is directed through a three-stage evaporation/crystallization process in which spent acid from the generator is evaporated and crystallized to produce stage 1 sodium bisulfate crystals. The first stage crystals are then redissolved to form a second solution which is crystallized in order to yield stage 2 sodium sesquisulfate crystals and, finally, the second stage crystals are redissolved in a third stage evaporation/crystallization stage to yield sodium sulfate crystals. Besides salt cake, the system also produces reusable sulfuric acid for the chlorine dioxide generator. No chemicals are added during the recovery steps.

    Abstract: A lehr for heat treating glass articles is assembled from a series of modules to define an elongated insulated tunnel. A belt conveyor extends throughout the tunnel for moving articles from one end to the other. Duct work connection between the tunnel and the ambient air and associated heating and blower means establish heating, tempering and cooling zones respectively within the lehr in the direction of conveyor movement. Temperature sensors adjacent both flights of the conveyor are linked with a control panel to permit establishment of any desired temperature curves.

    Abstract: A dryer felt comprising a plurality of spiral coils disposed in a common plane and arranged in a side-by-side relationship with adjacent coils being intermeshed and joined together in a hinged relationship by a hinge yarn. During manufacture, the fabric is subjected to a heat treatment under controlled tension to cause the spiral coils, which are normally circular, or elliptical in cross-section to assume the shape of the hinge yarns which are typically of rectangular, elliptical, D-shape, dog bone or two or more circular cross section yarns with the long side of the stuffer yarn lying in the plane of the fabric. In this way, the air voids within the fabric are substantially filled by the hinge yarns to reduce permeability, while the flattened spiral coils provide smooth paper-receiving and machine roll contacting surfaces on the resultant dryer felt.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method for sizing paper wherein the sizing agent employed is a hydrophobic cellulose reactive sizing agent such as a ketene dimer sizing agent. There is employed in combination with the sizing agent a novel sizing accelerator. Disclosed also is a novel sizing composition comprised of the sizing agent and the accelerator, the accelerator being a water-soluble nitrogen-containing reaction product of (1) a water-soluble polyaminopolyamide, such as that derived by reaction of adipic acid and diethylene-triamine; (2) an epihalohydrin, such as epichlorohydrin; and (3) a composition comprising, by weight, from about 20% to about 65% bis(hexamethylene)triamine, said composition being the residue obtained after recovery of hexamethylenediamine from its manufacture by hydrogenation of adiponitrile.

    Abstract: In a process for melting glass in a furnace adapted therefor, said furnace having an upstream melting zone and a downstream fining zone, wherein the molten glass travels along a path from the melting zone to the fining zone comprising:(a) introducing solid glass batch into the melting zone;(b) heating the batch whereby an upper layer of batch and a lower layer of molten glass are formed in the melting zone;(c) providing sufficient heat to maintain the molten glass in the molten state through the fining zone;(d) providing at least a part of the process heat through at least one oxygen/fuel flame located at each side of the path of the molten glass, said flames being fueled by an oxygen containing gas/fuel mixture wherein the oxygen containing gas contains about 50 percent to about 100 percent oxygen by volume; and(e) withdrawing the molten glass from the fining zone,the improvement comprising:(i) providing the oxygen/fuel flames at low momentum;(ii) directing the tip of each flame at the interface of the solid

    Abstract: Comminuted cellulosic materials which may or may not contain lignin are partially or totally hydrolyzed or saccharified by an improved organosolv process using an aqueous acetone solvent mixture containing a small amount of an acidic compound and containing at least about 70 percent by volume of acetone and up to virtually anhydrous acetone. The process is performed at elevated reaction temperatures, preferably at 145.degree. C. to 230.degree. C., for a limited period of time and then with cooling such that the resultant dissolved sugars from the hydrolysis are not degraded into non-sugars. In particular the reaction is conducted such that the cellulosic material is dissolved and such that at least ninety percent or more of available sugars in the cellulosic material are recovered. Unexpectedly it has been found that acetone at high concentration forms stable complexes with the sugars which prevents their degradation and also facilitates separation of the sugars.
