  • Publication number: 20240072849
Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure provide methods and devices that facilitate two-way redirection via a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) when beam correspondence does not hold. A first embodiment includes using a wide-beam redirection via RIS in which the RIS is configured to redirect the beam incident on the RIS in either direction such that the redirected beam can encompass the deviation of the redirected direction and still reach the destination. A second embodiment includes partitioning the RIS, or using multiple different RISs, where each part, or different RIS, is configured for each direction of communication. A third embodiment includes using time division-duplexing (TDD) such that the RIS is configured to transmit in one direction at a time.

  • Patent number: 11848709
Abstract: The present disclosure provides methods and devices that use the RIS phase shifting ability to provide many degrees of freedom to enable data to be overlaid on transmitted signals. The data overlay is done while the RIS is still beamforming the signal towards the receiver(s). The phase shifting capabilities of the RIS elements can provide amplitude, phase, frequency, and polarization manipulations. These manipulations can help enhance the communication and provide the ability to overlay information. The present application also provides new configuration signaling among devices in a communication network utilizing the RIS and configuration for the RIS.

  • Patent number: 11570629
Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure take advantage of a prism-like effect that occurs in a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), where the RIS reflects incident signals of different frequencies in different directions. for determining characteristics of a channel between a transmitter and a receiver wherein the channel includes the RIS. In particular, this may include estimating an angle of arrival (AoA) to the RIS in uplink transmission or the angle of departure (AoD) from the RIS in downlink transmission. Aspects of the present disclosure also provide solutions to compensate the prism effect for wideband transmission, especially at high frequencies (e.g. mmWave and THz).

  • Patent number: 11431103
Abstract: Aspect of the present disclosure provide a device that includes an array of subarrays (AoSA) comprising a plurality of subarrays, each subarray including a plurality of antenna elements and a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that includes a plurality of configurable elements. The AoSA and the RIS are spaced apart from one another such that each subarray and a corresponding subset of the plurality of configurable elements are in each other's near field. Some embodiments described in the disclosure allow large spacing between antenna elements of the AoSA, thereby enabling lower complexity in circuit implementation for power amplification and phase shifting that may be associated with each antenna element, especially as high frequencies where spacing between antenna elements decreases and in some embodiments, reduces the number of antennas that are used.

  • Publication number: 20220248300
Abstract: A method, network node and processor for processing uplink signals transmitted from a wireless device (WD) to provide a combination of quantize-forwarding and decode-forwarding relayed signals in massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) heterogeneous networks (HetNets). According to one aspect, whether quantize-forwarding or decode-forwarding is used depends on a ratio of a quality of a WD signal received at a Small Cell Base Station (SCBS) to a quality of the WD signal received at a Macro Cell Base Station (MCBS). When the ratio is less than a first threshold, signals received at the SCBS may be quantize-forwarded to the MCBS and when the ratio exceeds a second threshold larger than the first threshold, signals received at the SCBS may be decode-forwarded to the MCBS. When the ratio lies between the first and second threshold, signals received at the SCBS may be quantize-forwarded to the MCB.

  • Patent number: 10998945
Abstract: At a first communication device in a wireless communication network, reference signaling is received from a second communication device in two or more beams with a same direction, and one or more values associated with a direction at which the first communication device received the reference signaling from the second communication device are determined. The one or more values are determined based on the received reference signaling. The direction has a higher accuracy than a beam width associated with the received reference signaling. The direction may be or include an angle of arrival or an angle of departure, for example, and in the case of an angle of departure signaling indicative of the one or more values is transmitted by the first communication device, to the second communication device or another component such as network equipment.
