  • Publication number: 20120169154
Abstract: An axial-flux brushless electric motor which can be used in various applications, including, for example, driving a propulsion wheel of a vehicle. In one embodiment, the electric motor comprises a rotor comprising a plurality of permanent magnets defining a plurality of rotor poles. The electric motor also comprises a stator axially spaced from the rotor and comprising: at least one winding for conducting current; an electronic controller for controlling the current supplied to the at least one winding to rotate the rotor; and consolidating material in which the at least one winding and the electronic controller are embedded.

  • Patent number: 8016644
Abstract: An apparatus and method for micro-machining a surface of a workpiece having a complex surface profile including desired profile features and finer undesired profile features to be removed, including shaping a formable polishing tool using either the workpiece itself or a replica of the workpiece to have at least said desired profile features, and using said formable polishing tool to micro-machine said surface to remove said finer undesired profile features while maintaining said desired profile features. The formable polishing tool can be shaped to have at least said desired profile features by pressing the formable polishing tool against either the workpiece itself or the replica of the workpiece when the formable polishing tool is in a formable state, and the formable polishing tool can be used for micro-machining when the formable polishing tool is in a solid state.

  • Publication number: 20060065546
Abstract: A method for electric discharge machining (EDM) with a ductile carbonaceous electrode, to automate roughing, finishing, polishing and texturing operations on a electrically conductive material. The EDM method comprises using a ductile electrically conductive electrode made of carbon-polymer composite material. Prior to electric discharge machining, the electrode is made by heating uniformly a prescribed volume of said ductile electrode material, at a temperature close to the melting point temperature of the polymer matrix. The composite material is then molded into the desired electrode shape by pressing the soft material against a template, a mold model, a replicate of the workpiece or part of the workpiece. The formed electrode is then used to machine the desired shape and surface finish on the said workpiece using proper electric discharge machining techniques.

  • Patent number: 6146567
Abstract: A system for producing three dimensional components by bonding together successive layers of a porous material with droplets of a binder material. A binder printhead has an array of nozzles which controllably supply jets of binder material droplets to the layers of porous material. The printhead is scanned in a raster scan fashion over each layer of porous material along a first scan axis in one direction to provide first fast scanning paths of droplets. The printhead is then moved laterally of such one direction and is then moved along the fast-scan axis in the opposite direction to provide second fast scanning paths of droplets which are interlaced with the first scanning paths. The supply of the droplets to the porous material can be controlled so as to control the overlapping thereof to produce various desired surface and interior characteristics of the components.

  • Patent number: 5387380
Abstract: A process for making a component by depositing a first layer of a powder material in a confined region and then depositing a binder material to selected regions of the layer of powder material to produce a layer of bonded powder material at the selected regions. Such steps are repeated a selected number of times to produce successive layers of selected regions of bonded powder material so as to form the desired component. The unbonded powder material is then removed. In some cases the component may be further processed as, for example, by heating it to further strengthen the bonding thereof.
