Abstract: Copolymers of a 1,2 epoxy alkane and a cyclic carboxylate compound of the class consisting of dicarboxylic acid anhydrides, preferably maleic anhydride or a hydrocarbyl substituted succinic anhydride and a beta lactone, said copolymers having C.sub.10 to C.sub.50, preferably C.sub.20 to C.sub.40, linear, pendant hydrocarbon chains are flow improvers in residual and crude oils.
Abstract: Middle distillate oils are improved with respect to flow and pour point by incorporating therein halogenated polymers comprised of ethylene and free radical polymerizable monomers containing polar groups. The halogenated ethylene-polar monomer copolymers are found to be more effective flow improvers and pour depressants than non-halogenated ethylene-polar monomer copolymers. Preferred polymeric additives include the ethylene-isobutyl acrylate copolymers and the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers containing from about 5 to about 25 wt.% chlorine.
Abstract: Multigrade lubricating oils blended from petroleum distillates and, if desired, a bright stock containing waxy or wax-like components and modified by the presence of copolymeric ethylene-higher alpha-olefins viscosity index improving agents have their low temperature performance markedly improved when said copolymer contains a minor weight proportion of ethylene by the addition of from about 0.15 to about 1, preferably 0.2 to 0.5, wt. %, based upon the total weight of said lubricating oil composition of a combination of pour point depressants comprising: (a) from about 0.05 to about 0.75 wt. % of an oil-soluble condensation product of a chlorinated wax of from about 10 to about 50 carbon atoms and a mono- or dinuclear aromatic compound; and (b) from about 0.05 to about 0.75 wt % of an oil-soluble polymer of C.sub.10-18 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and/or an interpolymer of a vinyl alcohol ester of a C.sub.2 to C.sub.18 alkanoic acid and di(C.sub.6 -C.sub.18 alkyl) fumarate.
Abstract: Combinations of (A) an ethylene backbone polymer such as chlorinated polyethylene, or copolymers of 3 to 40 molar proportions of ethylene with a molar proportion of another monomer such as unsaturated esters, other olefins, vinyl chloride, etc., and (B) a polymer having long chain alkyl groups of 18 to 40 carbon atoms such as polymers of unsaturated esters, are cold flow improvers for low viscosity distillate fuel oils.
