  • Patent number: 6212988
Abstract: A detonation coating apparatus that coats a substrate with a coating powder which is propelled by the products of a detonation. The present invention increases the rate at which the coating is applied by increasing the detonation rate of the combustible gas mixture. The detonation coating apparatus is a self-detonating apparatus designed to create a secondary pressure within a combustion chamber. This secondary pressure combines with an initiating element, which is heated by detonation to a temperature, to ignite the combustible gas mixture as rapidly as the secondary pressure originates.

  • Patent number: 6168828
Abstract: A gas feed system for detonation gun apparatus having a labyrinth shaped gas path. The labyrinth is positioned between the fuel and oxygen supply and the combustion chamber of a detonation gun. The labyrinth allows the fuel and oxygen supply to flow into the combustion and precludes and migration of the detonation wave front into the fuel supply by destroying that portion of the detonation wave front that enters the labyrinth. The labyrinth gas feed system increases safety, reliability and productivity of the detonation coating process.

  • Patent number: 6146693
Abstract: An energy bleed apparatus and method for a detonation gun apparatus utilizing bleed apertures to remove reflected energy from interfering with the detonation wave front. The energy bleed system is positioned in the downstream portion of the combustion chamber of the detonation gun. The bleed apertures extract energy from the combustion chamber that would otherwise be reflected off the combustion chamber walls and collide with the detonation wave front, thereby permitting a maximum amount of energy to be transferred directly to the coating powder being applied. The increase in energy translates into better quality coatings and an associated increase in productivity of the overall coating process.

  • Patent number: 6000627
Abstract: A gas detonation apparatus and method for powder coating a work piece. The present invention lies in the ability to preselect a discreet number of the detonation cells and the judicious selection of a suitable barrel diameter. The present invention employs an energy bleed system positioned in the downstream end of a combustion chamber of a detonation gun to bleed off unwanted energy from the combustion chamber leaving behind a discreet number of detonation cells. The detonation cells are then discharged into the barrel of the detonation gun. The barrel diameter is selected to match the total area of the discreet detonation cells selected. The effect is to discharge a discreet number of detonation cells into the barrel to preclude energy loss to the detonation cells from interference with reflected energy within the barrel itself. The present invention substantially increases the productivity of the detonation coating process.

  • Patent number: 5985373
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying multi-layered coatings utilizing a detonation gun process. The present invention consists of multiple powder feeders (7, 8) attached to the barrel (13) of a detonation gun (2). The powder feeders (7, 8) are disposed at axially spaced locations along the barrel (13) and supply coating materials to the barrel (13) in advance of a detonation wave front (100) such that the powders are exhausted from the barrel (13) in serial fashion producing a multi-layered coating on the workpiece (1). The multi-layered coating system of the present invention substantially enhances the quality and productivity of the detonation coating process.
