The internal suction-air supply connectable to a negative-pressure source opens out on the inner circumference of the roller casing and is designed so that a stationary suction surface of wedge-shaped form is obtained on the casing circumference. The wedge tip is directed opposite to the direction of rotation of the roller casing and is located at the start of said circumference portion in the roller center. The suction surface widens obliquely outwards on both sides with an increasing looping angle and, at the end of the circumferential portion, has a width corresponding to the total width of the material web.

    Abstract: Liquid metal is supplied from the bottom to the top into a casting mold by way of a casting runner and a filling hole arranged at the lowest point of a casting mold. Direct further use of the casting by avoiding formation of a sprue that must be subsequently processed is possible due to the fact that after totally filling the casting mold and only partial solidification of the metal therein, the casting pressure is decreased or turned off, so that liquid metal flows back out of the casting mold only through a return flow channel having a cross section significantly smaller than the cross section of the casting runner. A ram having a face corresponding in size and shape to the outer contour of the casting in the region of the filling hole is pushed at least over the last segment of the casting runner, thus displacing liquid metal present in the last segment into the casting mold sufficiently far in the direction of the mold interior until the fact of the ram aligns with the inner contour of the casting mold.

    Abstract: Useless refrigerators or other commodities which contain or consist of polyurethane foam wherein the cells confine fluorochlorohydrocarbon gas are relieved of refrigerant and lubricant prior to being comminuted into 1 cm.sup.3 cubes or similar particles. The particles are classified in a suction chamber to segregate comminuted foam from metallic and/or plastic materials, and the particles of foam are thereupon ground and/or otherwise pulverized to a size in the range of 0.1 mm. This destroys the cells and releases the gas which is filtered, condensed and mixed with water prior to confinement in vessels.

    Abstract: Discarded refrigerators, freezers and like cooling units are relieved of confined supplies of coolant and/or lubricant by transporting them onto a tiltable platform which attracts the cooling units by suction and tilts them until the freshly tapped portion of the normally closed circuit for coolant or lubricant is located at the lowermost point of the circuit. The lubricant or coolant can be evacuated by a pump by way of a conduit which is connected to a tapping tool and discharges into a vessel. Alternatively, the coolant or lubricant is caused to flow from the tapped circuit by gravity to gather in a vessel beneath the tiltable platform. The transporting system for cooling units can employ trolleys and winches with suction cups which lift discarded cooling units from the gathering point for discarded cooling units and remove cooling units from the platform when the lubricant- or coolant-evacuating operation is completed.

    Abstract: Apparatus for testing the fitness of the multiple copy sets for handwritten copies. The form set to be tested is placed on an inclined supporting plate and is clamped to the supporting plate by a slotted hold down plate. A writing instrument, which includes a spring loaded writing implement, is carried by a carriage so that the tip of the writing implement contacts the form set through the slot. The carriage is movable so as to move the tip of the writing instrument along the slot. The writing implement is supported so that the tip contacts the form set substantially without pressure in a starting position. As the carriage is shifted in the direction of increasing ascent of the supporting plate the bearing pressure of the tip of the writing implement increases as a function of the path of travel. The test line produced on the different sheets of the set is a measure of the quality of the copies.

    Abstract: A method of and apparatus for measuring the flexural stiffness of a sheet like sample. The sample is placed on an obliquely positioned surface with its upper edge above a horizontal clamping line. The portion of the sample above the clamping line is of sufficient length so that when it is pivoted forward beyond the vertical the top portion of the sample is freely bent outward. The free clamping length of the sample measured between the top edge and the clamping point is then reduced until the top portion of the sample independently pivots back onto the surface. The residual clamping length thereby obtained is a measurement of the flexural stiffness.

    Abstract: A method for making a finish-effect film which possesses pores in a predetermined design pattern by printing an absorbent water-swellable supporting web in a predetermined design pattern with a substance that retards penetration of water, coating the web with an aqueous resin preparation, and then curing the resin. Three-dimensional pores are produced in the web in a pattern corresponding to the predetermined design due to greater swelling of the unprinted areas of the web by impregnation of the water from the aqueous resin preparation as compared to the printed areas. The thus produced finish-effect film can be used for decorative purposes in a manner similar to wood veneers.

    Abstract: Apparatus for testing the burst strength of a line of perforations in a sheet of paper. The testing apparatus comprises a first means fixedly mounted in a frame for gripping a sheet of paper on one side of a line of perforations extending across the paper and a second means rotatably mounted in the frame in spaced relation to the first means for gripping the paper on the other side of the line of perforations. A pendulum is attached to the second means so that swinging of the pendulum causes rotation of the second means. The pendulum may be swung along a path which extends from a first position, where energy is stored in the pendulum, through a second position, where the paper is rendered taut and the line of perforations is burst by the energy stored in the pendulum, to a third position, where the energy remaining in the pendulum after the bursting action is dissipated.
