    Abstract: A process for preparing compounds of the formula: ##STR1## or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each individually are hydrogen, halogen, or nitro, which comprises the steps of: (a) alkylating a compound of the formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.3 is C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl or phenyl, with a compound of the formula:R.sub.4 --Xwherein R.sub.4 is C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl or phenyl-alkyl where the alkyl is C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 and X is halogen, in the presence of a base to yield a compound of the formula: ##STR3## and; (b) cyclizing the compound formed during step (a) with ethylenediamine mono-p-toluenesulphonate at a temperature of 100.degree. to 200.degree. C. to yield the desired product. New intermediate compounds are also disclosed. The desired products have antihypertensive properties.
