The wireless receiver determines a likely initial data rate for each demodulated and decode data frame.

In one example, the encapsulation is performed at a Link Access Control (LAC) layer. Alternate embodiments may perform encapsulation at an alternate layer.

    Abstract: A dynamic shared forward link channel (or “data” channel) is used to send multicast data to a group of wireless devices, e.g., using a common long code mask for the data channel. Reference power control (PC) bits are also sent on the data channel and used for signal quality estimation. A shared forward link control channel is used to send user-specific signaling to individual wireless devices, e.g., using time division multiplexing (TDM) and a unique long code mask for each wireless device. A shared forward link indicator channel is used to send reverse link (RL) PC bits to the wireless devices, e.g., using TDM. The data channel is jointly power controlled by all wireless devices receiving the data channel. The control and indicator channels are individually power controlled by each wireless device such that the signaling and RL PC bits sent on these channels for the wireless device are reliably received.

    Abstract: To mitigate re-syncs, RLP sync control frames associated with a packet data session can be sequence numbered. A single sequence number can be assigned for an entire sync procedure associated with the initiation of a packet data session. For example, the sequence number can remains the same on all sync control frames (SYNC, SYNC/ACK, ACK) of a particular packet data session. When a sync frame is received out of order within a single sequence, it can be ignored under certain conditions. For example, if a SYNC frame with a sequence number 0 is received out of order after an ACK frame with sequence number 0 is received, the mobile station can ignore the out of order SYNC frame. Thus, an RLP re-sync is avoided due to out of order RLP sync packets.

    Abstract: A visit to an overhead channel to obtain base station identifiers is made if it is necessary to do so. Base station identifiers are indicative of an approximate location of a terminal. The determination to update the base station identifiers may be made by monitoring one or more base stations in the terminal's active set. In another aspect, the terminal can originate a new data call immediately after the necessary base station identifiers have been obtained from the overhead channel, without having to wait for the expiration of a timer (e.g., the dormant timer). Moreover, by maintaining the data session when terminating the data call for the overhead visit, data communication may be more quickly resumed, for a new data call originated after the overhead visit, using the same configured protocols.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus provide for scheduling reverse link transmission for a mobile station in a timely manner. A base station (101) may transmit on a forward link high rate channel and a forward link low rate channel to a mobile station during a common time slot. The high rate and low rate channels may be respectively the F-PDCH and the F-PDCCH. The base station may transmit a reverse link transmission scheduling information on the low rate channel. The mobile station may schedule transmission on the reverse link channel, such as R-SCH, based on the data received on the low rate channel. Since the low rate channel has only scheduling data (16 bits) and the high rate channel may have no data (null data) at all, the base station may decide to transmit the reverse link scheduling information to the mobile station very quickly on the forward link.

    Abstract: Various techniques for improving a wireless communication device are described. The techniques may include reducing power in a wireless communication device for a first sleep period and then increasing power in the wireless communication device for an intermediate wake period after the first sleep period to estimate an error of the sleep clock. The method may further include reducing power in the wireless communication device for a second sleep period after the intermediate wake period. The intermediate wake mode implemented during the intermediate period can be used to estimate the error of the sleep clock without performing one or more tasks associated with an awake mode, such as demodulation. The techniques may facilitate the effective use of low frequency low power clocks for sleep mode, even when relatively large slot cycles are defined within a slotted paging system.

A service acquisition mechanism acquires the wireless service or one of the other wireless services based on predetermined selection criteria and the signal. More specifically, the present invention includes a wireless phone having a first mechanism for determining if a detected system, i.e., service is associated with a coverage area that overlaps one or more coverage areas of different systems. A second mechanism compares the different systems to the detected system and selects a preferred system based on the comparison. A third mechanism acquires the preferred system.
