Patent number: 12219315Abstract: A method performed by an in-ear headphone. Coupled to the in-ear headphone is a first ear tip that is inserted into an ear canal of a user. The method obtains an audio signal from an audio source device paired with the in-ear headphone and uses the signal to drive a speaker of the headphone to output a sound into the ear canal. The method obtains a microphone signal that is responsive to the outputted sound. The method notifies the user to replace the first ear tip with a second ear tip in response to a parameter associated with the microphone signal being less than a threshold.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2023Date of Patent: February 4, 2025Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Esge B. Andersen, Andrew E. Greenwood, Tom-Davy W. Saux, Baptiste P. Paquier, Hanchi Chen, Raghavendra S. Prabhu

Publication number: 20240259721Abstract: A housing has a bud portion abutting an elongated stem portion. The bud portion is to fit within an ear. The bud portion has a primary sound outlet at its far end that is to be inserted into an outer ear canal, and abuts the stem portion at its near end. A speaker driver is inside the bud portion. Electronic circuitry inside the housing includes a wireless communications interface to receive audio content over-the-air and in response provides an audio signal to the speaker driver. A rechargeable battery as a power source for the electronic circuitry is located inside a cavity of the stem portion. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 22, 2024Publication date: August 1, 2024Inventors: Zachary C. Rich, Kurt R. Stiehl, Arun D. Chawan, Michael B. Patent number: 12010496Abstract: A method performed by an audio source device. The method receives a first audio signal and a second, different audio signal and encodes the first audio signal and the second audio signal, wherein the first audio signal is encoded differently than the second audio signal. The method generates a first data packet that comprises the first encoded audio signal and a first volume level and a second data packet that comprises the second encoded audio signal and a second volume level, wherein the first volume level is lower than the second volume level and transmits, over a wireless connection, the first and second data packets as a dual audio stream to an audio output device.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2021Date of Patent: June 11, 2024Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Aarti Kumar, Shehryar Lasi, Baptiste P. Paquier, Brian Clark

Patent number: 11979734Abstract: A system and method is described for determining whether a loudspeaker device has relocated, tilted, rotated, or changed environment such that one or more parameters for driving the loudspeaker may be modified and/or a complete reconfiguration of the loudspeaker system may be performed. In one embodiment, the system may include a set of sensors. The sensors provide readings that are analyzed to determine 1) whether the loudspeaker has moved since a previous analysis and/or 2) a distance of movement and/or a degree change in orientation of the loudspeaker since the previous analysis. Upon determining the level of movement is below a threshold value, the system adjusts previous parameters used to drive one or more of the loudspeakers. By adjusting previous parameters instead of performing a complete recalibration, the system provides a more efficient technique for ensuring that the loudspeakers continue to produce accurate sound for the listener.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2021Date of Patent: May 7, 2024Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Bruce C. Po, Richard M. Powell, Aram M. Lindahl, Baptiste P. Paquier, Phillip A. Kamp

Publication number: 20240064482Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology provide for calibration of audio devices in a case. In some implementations, the calibration techniques may include detecting that an audio device is docked in a case and a lid of the case is in a closed position, where the audio device is positioned in a cavity of the case. In addition, the calibration techniques may include emitting a test audio signal from a speaker of the audio device into the case. The device may include receiving, in response to the test audio signal, a received signal at a sensor inside the case. Moreover, the device may include obtaining a correction for the audio device based on the received signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 24, 2023Publication date: February 22, 2024Inventors: Caleb RAU, Mark P. Patent number: 11432093Abstract: A system and method to encode and decode multiple audio signals to provide independent control of the audio signals is provided. A host device may encode the audio signals to enable a complete separation of the constituent audio signals when the mixed stream is decoded on a playback device. The gains of the audio signals may be independently controlled before they are mixed to increase the intelligibility of one audio signal relative to another audio signal at the playback device. The ability to separate the constituent audio signals from the mixed signals at the playback device allows the processing operations performed on the constituent audio signals and the associated path latencies to be independently chosen. In addition, in applications where the mixed stream is transmitted from a single host device to multiple playback devices, the constituent audio signals may be selectively masked on a playback device to increase user privacy.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2020Date of Patent: August 30, 2022Assignee: APPLE INC.Inventors: Brian D. Clark, Baptiste P. Paquier
