Patent number: 8533702Abstract: The present invention generally is directed to a method, system and article of manufacture for managing software fixes for a software product in a computer system. The method comprises: for each of a plurality of software fixes for a corresponding software product, determining whether the corresponding software product is installed on the computer system; if the corresponding software product is installed, then determining whether the each one of the plurality of software fixes is installed in the computer system; and if the each one of the plurality of software fixes is installed, then setting a status value to reflect that the plurality of software fixes is installed.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2002Date of Patent: September 10, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Barbara A. Ballard, George F. DeStefano, Ronald J. Haugen, Gregory R. Hintermeister, Brian R. Lucier, Diane E. Olson, Ellen B. Streifel, Gary John Vanselow, Jeffrey D. Waldbillig

Patent number: 6980642Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing abbreviated dialing functionality to a user's subscriber terminal or telephone by automatically adding a designated string of digits to any abbreviated extension dialed by the user. The subscriber terminal may include a processor, a memory (e.g., ROM, flash memory, non-volatile memory, hard disk, etc.), a “Send” button or the like, one or more sequences of digits stored in the memory, and a translation routine executable by the processor. The translation routine is executed when the processor determines that the digits entered by the user represent an abbreviated extension, for example, when a user dials fewer than seven digits and presses the “Send” button on a subscriber terminal. When executed, the translation routine automatically prepends or adds one of the stored sequences of digits to the abbreviated extension entered by the user, and then the subscriber terminal dials the resulting composite telephone number.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2000Date of Patent: December 27, 2005Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Yat-Sang Hung, Barbara Ballard, Tony Tsoi

Patent number: 6727916Abstract: A method and system for assisting a user to engage in a microbrowser-based interactive chat session. The microbrowser displays a conversation choice card comprising (i) a history-of-communications and (ii) a number of choice-items related to the chat session. The use of a conversation choice-card conveniently reduces the number of keystrokes that a user might otherwise need to carry out various functions related to the chat session. It also may cut the number of keystrokes required to perform interactive chat functions.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2000Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: Sprint Spectrum, L.P.Inventor: Barbara Ballard

Patent number: 6577999Abstract: In a computer speech dictation system, a method for automatically managing a plurality of acoustic models. The method is intended to ensure that only high reliability acoustic models which accurately reflect word pronunciations for a given user are retained. The method is accomplished by assigning a base quality metric value for each of the acoustic models maintained by a speech recognition application. The quality metric is incremented or decremented upon the occurrence of certain events relevant to the reliablity of the acoustic model. Acoustic model are discarded when the quality metric value falls below a threshold value.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1999Date of Patent: June 10, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: James R. Lewis, Barbara Ballard

Patent number: 6346954Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for managing a plurality of data storage systems. A plurality of graphically designatable data storage systems are displayed within a computer system display. A subset of the plurality of graphically designatable data storage systems are selected to be utilized in a data storage array. A data distribution mode for the data array is designated. An iconic representation of selected data storage systems of the data storage array is automatically graphically displayed in response to the selected subset of data storage systems and the designated data distribution mode such that complete data storage arrays may be graphically illustrated for management purposes.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1998Date of Patent: February 12, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Simon Chu, Gayle Steinbugler, Barbara Ballard

Patent number: 6324499Abstract: A method and system for responding to randomly occurring noise in a voice recognition application program. The system receives an audio signal representative of sound in an audio environment and processes the audio signal to identify certain non-speech sounds. A pre-defined action is performed in response to the non-speech sound which has been identified. The pre-defined action is selected from the group consisting of disabling a microphone source of the audio signal, suspending further processing of the audio signal by the speech recognition system, executing a user-defined macro, and ignoring the sound. The system may perform additional steps including recording a sound which is to be identified as a non-speech sound and assigning one of the pre-defined actions to be performed in response when the non-speech sound has been identified.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1999Date of Patent: November 27, 2001Assignee: International Business Machines Corp.Inventors: James R. Lewis, Barbara Ballard

Patent number: 6314397Abstract: In a computer system having a word processing application adapted for speech recognition, a method and system to propagate corrections in dictated text. in response to a first user command, a first error word is selected to be corrected from a word processing file containing dictated text. The error word is replaced by a correct word selected by a user. The system subsequently searches the dictated text contained in the document fie in response to another user command to locate a second or subsequent error word that is a close acoustic match to the first error word. The second or subsequent error word may then be replaced using a word selected from an alternate word list.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1999Date of Patent: November 6, 2001Assignee: International Business Machines Corp.Inventors: James R. Lewis, Kerry Ortega, Barbara Ballard

Patent number: 6253177Abstract: In a computer speech dictation system, a method and system for automatically determining whether to update a language model based upon user amendments to text in a dictated word processing document. The method includes the steps of monitoring a user's text-amending input to an application program for amending the dictated text and subsequently performing processing responsive to the monitoring step to determine whether the text-amending input corrects a misrecognized word in the dictated text. If the test amending input corrects a misrecognized word, the system updates a language model based upon the text which has been amended.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1999Date of Patent: June 26, 2001Assignee: International Business Machines Corp.Inventors: James R. Lewis, Barbara Ballard
