    Abstract: A method for encrypting database data includes generating an encryption key for a first file stored in a data store, wherein a table in a database comprises an entry pointing to the first file. The method includes generating a second file by encrypting the data the first file in the data store using the encryption key without modifying the first file. The method includes, in response to generating the second file, modifying the entry in the table to point to the second file, wherein the modification of the entry is performed atomically. A process for rekeying from the first file to the second file may happen in the background without blocking, interfering, or otherwise obstructing user interaction with a database system.

The method includes determining that a degree of clustering of the table data is below a clustering threshold. The method further includes reclustering one or more partitions of the table to improve the degree of clustering of the table in response to one or more of: determining that the degree of clustering has fallen below the clustering threshold, an explicit user command from a user, and/or as part of a DML command. Reclustering may be performed in incremental steps to iteratively improve clustering.

A computer database server is disclosed that executes the query and generates a result set based on and in response to the received query. An execution platform is disclosed that divides the result set into a plurality of chunks, wherein each chunk comprises a portion of the generated result set. The resource manager adds metadata to each of the plurality of chunks. A first chunk of the plurality of chunks comprises metadata pointing to the plurality of chunks. The resource manager delivers at least the first chunk of the plurality of chunks to the client in response to the query. The execution platform offloads the remaining plurality of chunks to cloud storage in parallel.

If the first determination and second determination are positive (i.e., the statement can be executed in parallel and parallel execution is faster by the predetermined factor), a recommendation can be provided indicating that the SQL statement should be executed in parallel. In some embodiments, the recommendation can include a report specifying the degree of performance improvement gained from parallel execution, additional system resources consumed by parallel execution, and other statistics pertaining to the recommended parallel execution plan.
