    Abstract: A torque multiplier subsea tool for setting a seal between a casing hanger and a subsea wellhead includes a mandrel having a sun gear with axial elongate teeth. An outer barrel is disposed around the mandrel forming an annulus therebetween. A planetary gear assembly is disposed in the annulus between the barrel and the sun gear to transmit to the barrel a torque which is higher in magnitude than that applied to the mandrel. A connector body disposed around the mandrel, below the planetary gear assembly, includes radially movable dogs for engaging the casing hanger. The barrel engages the sealing assembly and transmits the increased torque thereto to advance the sealing assembly downwards and to set the seal. The mandrel advances downwards with the sealing assembly and releases the dogs from the casing hanger. An emergency release mechanism is provided to advance the mandrel downwards to release the dogs in the event such downward movement is prevented during normal seal setting operation.

    Abstract: Method for completing an underwater well includes locating drilling apparatus at the well site, and installing conductor casing in the floor of the body of water with a wellhead, blowout preventer stack, and riser attached thereto at a point near the floor, with the riser extending upwardly to the drilling means. A drill string and standard 171/2 inch drill bit is then run through the wellhead and conductor casing, and a hole is drilled for suspending 16 inch casing within the wellhead and conductor casing. A hanger-support member having a casing string attached thereto is lowered into the well until it lands in the wellhead, and it is then rotated less than 360.degree. to connect it within the wellhead. The hanger-support member is then latched within the wellhead. A hole is then drilled for suspending another casing within the wellhead, and a casing hanger with casing string is run through the riser and into the wellhead, and the casing hanger is landed on the hanger-support member.

    Abstract: A remotely operable torus type connector for releasably connecting the adjoining ends of tubular members together wherein each of the ends is provided with a locking shoulder and one of the ends has a plurality of locking segments pivotally mounted thereon with a surrounding torus section adapted to slidably engage the corresponding outer surface of the locking segments to pivot such segments inwardly or outwardly as the torus section is moved longitudinally thereof. The torus section is carried by a ring slidably mounted in a surrounding housing with hydraulic or mechanical means for sliding the ring in the torus section.

    Abstract: A ram-type valve assembly for well blowout prevention applications and the like. Opposing ram assemblies disposed in ram guideways transverse to the valve bore are each provided with two pistons extending outward of the valve housing having internal passages communicating with respective passages internal of the housing terminating in respective closing and opening ports. A cylinder assembly with interconnected cylindrical chambers is slidably disposed about respective pistons. Pressurizing the closing or opening ports transmits pressure through the pistons to the chambers, effecting cylinder assembly movement along the pistons inward toward and outward from the bore, respectively. Each cylinder assembly is interconnected to its respective ram, transmitting cylinder movement to the ram. The hydraulic circuits are isolated from the bore preventing hydraulic circuit contamination and accidental ram opening from bore pressure leaks into the hydraulics.

    Abstract: A breech block hanger support member for a subsea wellhead assembly for wells having a working pressure up to approximately 15,000 psi. The assembly includes a wellhead, the support member, a packoff for sealing the support member, and one or more other casing hangers supported by the support member. The support member is connected to the wellhead for itself suspending casing, for supporting at least one other casing hanger and casing, and for containing the working pressure. Breech block teeth are provided on the wellhead and support member to permit the support member to be stabbed into the wellhead and rotated less than 360.degree. for completing the connection therebetween. The teeth include groupings of spaced-apart no-lead teeth having slots therebetween. The slots provide a flow way for passing well fluids. The support member further includes an upper annular flange for arresting its downward movement within the wellhead. This flange includes flutes aligned with the slots for passing well fluids.

    Abstract: In accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the present invention, the individual slip members of a pipe handling apparatus are maintained in substantially the same horizontal plane by plate members attached to the top of the respective slip members, each of said plate members having projecting portions that overlap and engage the projecting portions of an adjacent plate member. The maintenance of the slip members in substantially the same horizontal plane assures uniform engagement of the teeth thereof with the outer wall of a pipe.

    Abstract: A valve apparatus of the ram type having a pair of ram assembly bodies in opposed relation transverse to the valve bore. The ram bodies carry, in recess, respective inner seals which, upon inward movement of the ram bodies, effect sealing engagement so as to restrict flow through the valve bore. A plurality of locking pins are included disposed vertically through each seal, each such locking pin having projections extending outward of its respective seal beyond the top and bottom thereof. Each projection is matingly received by a corresponding slotted portion of the recess within and defined by said ram assembly body for restricting relative movement of said inner seal with respect to movement of its respective ram assembly body.

    Abstract: Disclosed are apparatus for gripping and manipulating pipe members, including a plurality of slip carriers mounted on an equal number of carrier actuators. The carrier actuators are arranged within a drive sleeve and constrained by radial T-slot connections to a base ring. Sloped T-slot connections link each of the carrier actuators to the drive sleeve. Longitudinal movement of the drive sleeve in one sense propels the carrier actuators and the slip carriers radially inwardly whereby slips mounted on the slip carriers may grip a pipe member positioned within the drive sleeve; longitudinal movement of the drive sleeve in the opposite sense withdraws the carrier actuators and slip carriers from the pipe member. Cooperating wedging surfaces between each of the slip carriers and the corresponding carrier actuator permits the application of holding or moving force on pipe members in either longitudinal sense.

    Abstract: Disclosed are coiled tubing apparatus for operating on wells. A tubing injector head is supported on a mast and is moveable to selected elevations along the mast. The mast includes a lower section maintained in upright orientation, and an upper section which is pivotally joined to the lower section. The injector head may be lowered below the pivot point and the mast folded for transportation purposes. A chain drive maneuvers the injector head in one horizontal direction, and a fluid pressure cylinder maneuvers the injector head in a second horizontal direction generally orthogonal to the first. The chain drive is fitted with a worm gear coupling to positively lock the injector head in position. A height-adjustable level wind tubing guide directs the tubing onto or off of a reel. The base of the apparatus is fitted with a track along which a blowout preventer may be moved for subsequent positioning over a well.

    Abstract: A tubing hanger for suspending multiple strings of tubing in a subsea wellhead or casing hanger upon being lowered from the drill vessel into a properly oriented seating position in the casing hanger. The tubing hanger is releasably secured to the casing hanger by hydraulic manipulation of the running tool after the tubing hanger has been oriented in the casing hanger. Thereafter, by further hydraulic manipulation, the running tool is released from the hydraulic set tubing hanger for retrieval to the drill ship. The running tool may later be returned and connected to the tubing hanger and, by further manipulation of the running tool, the hanger is disconnected from the casing hanger and elevated to the drill ship.

During the transporting and laying of the line, the flowline is supported by a series of spaced adjustable buoys which support the flowline at a desired depth beneath the surface and which can be remotely actuated to lower the flowline to the ocean floor.

    Abstract: A buoy having a controllable buoyancy and being particularly adapted for subsea use. The buoy includes an upper buoyant chamber member mounted with a lower chamber member. The lower chamber member has a lower chamber formed in it for containing variable amounts of a fluid which is buoyant in water and for containing variable amounts of water. The lower chamber member additionally has an opening formed in its bottom to permit water to pass into and out of the lower chamber and fill the portion of the lower chamber which is not occupied by the buoyant fluid. A control assembly operably connected to the lower chamber regulates the amounts of buoyant fluid in the lower chamber so that the buoyancy of the buoy is controlled.
