  • Patent number: 10166947
Abstract: Sealed web retractors and associated systems and methods for retracting a web, such as seat belt web, are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a web retractor includes a frame having a sidewall with a first opening, a locking assembly attached to the frame and having a housing with a second opening adjacent to the first opening, and a shaft coupler rotatably and sealably carried by the sidewall. The shaft coupler operably couples a spool shaft to the locking assembly through the first and second openings. At least one seal is operably positioned in the first opening between the shaft coupler and the sidewall.

  • Patent number: 10086795
Abstract: Buckle assemblies having load indicating features and associated systems and methods are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a buckle assembly includes a tang having an opening that receives a web to secure the buckle assembly to a vehicle or a seat structure. The tang also includes an elongate aperture and one or more deformable protrusions along the edge of the aperture. The tang is operably coupled to a buckle frame via a coupling member that extends through the aperture. Upon the application of a sufficient load to the tang, the coupling member deforms the protrusion(s), allowing the tang to move relative to the frame. Movement of the tang relative to the frame can move a colored load indicating region to a position that is visible through a window in a housing of the buckle assembly.

  • Patent number: 8123293
Abstract: A seat assembly for a vehicle comprises a pedestal for mounting to the vehicle. A seat bottom is coupled to the pedestal and is rotatable about a first axis between a seating position and a stowed position. A seat back is coupled to the pedestal and is rotatable about a second axis spaced from the first axis from an upright position to a forward position in response to a predetermined force from behind the seat back. A deformable extension is fixed to and extends between the seat back and the pedestal. The deformable extension is configured to deform to absorb energy when the seat back rotates from the upright position to the forward position.

  • Publication number: 20110140488
Abstract: A seat assembly for a vehicle comprises a seat bottom and a seat back rotatably coupled to the seat bottom. The seat bottom can selectively rotate about a rotational axis in forward rotation for absorbing energy from an impact of an occupant seated behind the seat back striking the seat back from behind. An extension is fixed relative to the seat back is spaced about the rotational axis from the seat back and a member is coupled to the extension and to the seat bottom. The extension selectively supports the seat back in the upright position. The extension is deformable relative to the member when the seat back rotates in the forward rotation so that the extension deforms to absorb energy in forward rotation.

  • Publication number: 20100052378
Abstract: A seat assembly for a bus includes a seat bottom and a seat back pivotally coupled to the seat bottom. An energy absorbing link extends from the seat bottom to the seat back for controlling pivoting of the seat back relative to the seat bottom. The energy absorbing link has a first portion connected to the seat bottom, a second portion connected to the seat back, and a deformable portion disposed therebetween. The deformable portion is deformed as the seat back pivots relative to the seat bottom to absorb energy. First and second members are fixed relative to the energy absorbing link. The first and second members are spaced from each other when the seat back is in an upright position and abut each other when the seat back rotates to a rearward position to limit the deformation of the deformable portion and prevent pivoting beyond the rearward position.

  • Patent number: 7648171
Abstract: A seat belt buckle system includes a seat belt with a latch plate, and a seat belt buckle assembly. The seat belt buckle assembly includes a buckle head for receiving the latch plate, a scabbard covering a portion of the buckle head, and a buckle stalk connecting the buckle head to a vehicle body portion. The scabbard includes at least one tear seam located at an intersection of the first wall and the third wall. The scabbard is configured such that a separation force of the tear seam is less than a buckling load of the scabbard, such that when the buckle is impacted and undergoes a shock load during buckle pretensioning, the tear seam will separate and allow the buckle head to slide down the ramped surface preventing a shock load from a hard contact point that would cause the latch plate to delatch from the buckle head.

  • Patent number: 6371510
Abstract: A vehicle occupant safety device (20) comprising: an air bag (70) initially in a folded configuration and when inflated by inflation gases expands to an inflated configuration to protect the occupant; an inflator (50) for providing inflation gases to inflate the air bag; a shroud (80) comprising a plurality of frangible straps, preferably loosely positioned about the exterior of the folded air bag for controlling the trajectory of the inflating air bag by initially restricting the forward extension of the air bag by interaction with the shroud (80) and thereafter directing the air bag to inflate along a passageway defined by the shroud which is oriented at a downward angle relative to the occupant. Once the air bag exits the shroud it is free to inflate laterally and upwardly to protect the occupant. In one embodiment the shroud includes a tearable strap (140).

  • Patent number: 6302437
Abstract: A unique glove box and restraint system including a reaction bracket is provided. The glove box assembly includes a reaction bracket that is attached to a hinge mechanism. The reaction bracket carries a storage bin, a latch, a trim plate, a tether, and a gas source. The gas source is held in an operative relationship with an inflatable air bag. The inflatable air bag is coupled to the trim plate. The trim plate includes an outer panel and an inner attachment plate. The inner attachment plate is selectively coupled to the reaction bracket by a mechanism that disengages when it experiences an outward force greater than a predetermined amount. The latch is connected to the reaction bracket at the end opposing the hinge. During conditions of rapid deceleration, the gas source produces gas to inflate the air bag if electrical current is sent to trigger the gas source by the vehicle crash sensing system.
