Abstract: The present invention discloses an object-oriented programming (OOP) based adapter and handler framework for Web server extensions. The adapter and handler framework provides a generic interface between a Web server program and computer programs external to the Web server program (also known as extensions). The framework isolates the extensions from Web server and operating system dependencies. Moreover, the framework can be easily customized to conform to specific interface protocols.

Abstract: An object oriented system manages the life of objects referenced by other objects in the computer memory. A compiler compiles the various classes that are to be included in the object oriented program to be run on the computer. Some classes are the counted object class type that provides a count of the number of objects referencing a target counted object. Other classes are the uncounted object class type that does not provide a count of the number of objects referencing a target uncounted object. A counter wrapper class is included, whose instantiated object provides a count of the number of objects referencing a target uncounted object when the counter wrapper object is associated with the target uncounted object. A means is provided to determine whether a new target object is from the uncounted object class and, if so, that selectively causes the counter wrapper object to be associated with the new target object.

These classes encapsulate standard file system properties such as name, creation date, and size, as well as standard operations such as create, open, close, and property accessors. Using object-oriented programming, the class properties and operations can easily be modified and extended. Also provided is a convenient and efficient means for searching through the entities, and collecting heterogeneous sets. Further, a category of notification classes is provided for notifying clients when an entity has changed. Still further, user authentication and protection domains are used to protect against unauthorized access. Finally, a means for working with foreign file systems running under different operating systems is provided.
