    Abstract: A backlight module (20) includes a light guide plate (22), a light source (21), and a reflection plate (23). The light guide plate includes a light incidence surface (221) for receiving light, a light emitting surface (223) for emitting light, and a bottom surface (222). The light source is disposed adjacent the light incidence surface. The reflection plate disposed under the bottom surface includes a base (232), and a reflection layer (233) formed on the base. The reflection layer defines a number of diffraction grating units (231) at an outer surface thereof. Grating constants of the diffraction grating units progressively decrease with increasing distance away from the light incidence surface. This enables the light emitting surface to output highly uniform light. Further, if the process of fabrication of the diffraction grating units fails, only the reflection plate need be discarded. Thus the backlight module has a low mass manufacturing cost.

The subwavelength grating is a zeroth-order grating which covers a wide wavelength band and diffracts the light into zeroth-order waves. So that the light guide plate has a high light utilization efficiency and yields high uniformity of outgoing light.

    Abstract: A light guide plate includes two opposite incident surfaces for receiving light beams, an emitting surface joining the two incident surfaces and a bottom surface opposite to the emitting surface. The emitting surface has a V-shaped profile defined by two symmetric oblique surfaces slanting down toward each other at a predetermined angle. Further, each of the oblique surfaces defines a plurality of grooves extending therein and being arranged along an oblique direction thereof. The surface light source incorporating the light guide plate is inexpensive and has higher intensity of illumination at the center region thereof. Thus a liquid crystal display incorporating the surface light source satisfactorily illuminates a main visible range thereof.

The refractive-diffractive hybrid lenses can reduce or even avoid chromatic aberration along axes thereof. This can converge emitted light beams, thereby enhancing a brightness of the emitted light beams. Thus, the light guide plate can provide good display quality. Therefore, the light guide plate can be advantageously applied in backlight modules (210) of liquid crystal display devices.

The at least two sets of include diffusing elements that are formed along two different directions. By utilization of the at least two sets of diffusing elements, the light guide plate provides a uniform luminance over the whole of the light emitting surface.

A backlight system (900) includes a light guide plate (20), and a number of the above-described LEDs disposed adjacent to the light guide plate. Light beams having wide radiation angles are emitted from the LEDs and enter the light guide plate. This enables a light emitting surface of the light guide plate to have highly uniform brightness.

    Abstract: A back light system (2) includes a light guide plate (50). The light guide plate includes an array of prisms (55) formed thereon, and a nano-particle layer (80) formed on the prisms for diffusing light beams propagating therethrough. The nano-particle layer contains a mass of transparent nano-particles with diameters preferably in the range from 30˜100 nm. A material of the particles may be TiO2 (titanium oxide), SiO2 (silicon dioxide), or Al2O3 (aluminum oxide). Each light beam passing through the nano-particle layer is scattered, and most of the scattering occurs over a limited range of angles. The scattered light beams exit the nano-particle layer mostly over the limited range of angles, with a medial direction of propagation in the range of angles being substantially parallel to a viewing direction. The back light system can yield high brightness and uniform luminescence, and is relatively simple in construction and inexpensive.
