  • Patent number: 10315617
Abstract: A seat belt retractor comprises a rotatable spool on which seat belt webbing is wound. The spool is rotatable in a webbing withdrawal direction and an opposite webbing retraction direction. The seat belt retractor also comprises a pretensioner actuatable to rotate the spool in the webbing retraction direction and a load-limiting system to limit a load applied to a vehicle occupant by the seat belt webbing. The load-limiting system includes a torsion bar mounted such that the torsion bar is twisted when a load in excess of a predetermined load is applied to the spool in the webbing withdrawal direction by the seat belt webbing. The bad-limiting system also includes a stop assembly actuatable to limit rotation of the spool in the webbing withdrawal direction to a predetermined number of rotations while the torsion bar is being twisted. The stop assembly is actuated upon actuation of the pretensioner.

  • Patent number: 5882084
Abstract: A seat belt retractor (10) for mounting on a vehicle seat back (22) includes a spool (110) on which seat belt webbing (32) is wound. The retractor (10) includes inertia sensing means (40) for blocking rotation of the spool (110) in a belt withdrawal direction (124) in response to vehicle deceleration above a predetermined deceleration. The inertia sensing means (40) comprises a first inertia member (222) movable from an unactuated position to an actuated position in response to vehicle deceleration above a predetermined deceleration, and sensor means (230) operable to block rotation of the spool (110) in the belt withdrawal direction (124) in response to movement of the first inertia member (222) from the unactuated position to the actuated position.

  • Patent number: 5544838
Abstract: A vehicle seat belt retractor (10) includes a frame (12) supporting a spool (50) on which seat belt webbing (72) is wound for rotation in belt withdrawal (76) and belt retraction (75) directions. A lever (196) for use in preventing rotation of the spool (50) in the belt withdrawal direction (76) has a cylindrical portion (220) and a key (224) extending radially outward from the cylindrical portion (220). The lever (196) is supported for pivotal movement on a support member (112) that has a cylindrical chamber (222) for receiving the cylindrical portion (220) of the lever (196). A keyway (226) extends radially outward from the cylindrical chamber (222) for receiving the key (224) of the lever (196). The keyway (226) includes a surface (227) engageable by the key (224) of the lever (196) to prevent axial movement of the cylindrical portion (220) out of the cylindrical chamber (222).
