  • Publication number: 20170192960
Abstract: A system for processing text captured from rendered documents is described. The system receives a sequence of one or more words optically or acoustically captured from a rendered document by a user. The system identifies among words of the sequence a word with which an action has been associated. The system then performs the associated action with respect to the user.

  • Publication number: 20170193575
Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosed innovations provide systems and methods for automatically locating and retrieving digital supplemental materials and counterparts of rendered documents. These systems and methods are especially useful when the provider or copyright holder of the digital document charges a fee for access to the digital materials. Some embodiments solve the technical problem of allowing a user to access restricted digital content associated with a rendered document via a search string captured from the rendered document. Some embodiments further provide automatic intermediation to gain access to protected digital materials.

  • Patent number: 9684902
Abstract: A facility for initiating a purchase is described. The facility receives a text sequence captured by a user from a rendered document using a handheld text capture device. The facility identifies in the received text sequence a reference to a distinguished product. In response to identifying the reference, the facility presents to the user an opportunity to place an order for the established product. If the user accepts the presented opportunity to order the distinct product, the facility orders the distinct product on behalf of the user.

  • Publication number: 20170140219
Abstract: A system for processing data captured from rendered documents is described. The system provides a way for authors and publishers to add value to printed documents using associated supplemental material. The system can use text scanned from a document and context to identify an electronic document that corresponds to the scanned document. A user can then access supplemental material associated with the digital document.

  • Publication number: 20170017837
Abstract: A device for capturing rendered text is described. The device incorporates one or more visual sensors that receive visual information as a part of capturing rendered text. The visual sensors are collectively capable of capturing both text that is permanently printed on a page, and text that is displayed transitorily on a dynamic device. The device further incorporates a visual information disposition subsystem for disposing of visual information received by the visual sensors. The device further incorporates a package that bears the visual sensors and the visual information disposition subsystem, and is suitable to be held in a human hand.

  • Patent number: 9348512
Abstract: A system and method controlling the location of a text insertion cursor that marks a location where content is to be added to a content accumulator. The system automatically maintains one or more active cursor locations that mark where content has been sequentially added at one or more different positions in the content accumulator. The system receives a command to move the insertion cursor to a location of a previously created active cursor location. In one embodiment, active cursor locations are stored in a list and the insertion cursor can be moved to each active cursor location in the list. Therefore, if the user enters content in the content accumulator non-sequentially, the method may maintain one active cursor following each sequentially entered text string. Upon receiving an active cursor recalling command from the user, the method recalls an active cursor by relocating the content insertion cursor to the active cursor.

  • Patent number: 9244611
Abstract: A system and method for performing actions via a keyboard application of a computing device is described. In some examples, a contextual keyboard facilitates the entry of text and the performance of actions across applications supported by a device. For example, the contextual keyboard may receive a word macro and/or a gesture, and determine that the received word macro and/or gesture is a command to perform one or more actions. Example actions to be performed include searching for information, storing information, posting information, sending information, enhancing information, and so on.

  • Patent number: 9244610
Abstract: A contextual keyboard allows users to bring in information not normally found on a keyboard, as though that information had been typed in afresh. It also allows users to take information entered on the keyboard, or simply available on the screen, or implicit in information on the screen, and perform actions on it, such as calling a phone number, entering contact or calendar information into a local database on the device, or using the information as search terms in an online query. The central novelty of this invention is moving the functionality into the keyboard layer, so as to be universally accessible on the device.
