Patent number: 5371698Abstract: The multi-dimensional optical memory utilizes the wavelength and intensity dimensions to effect a high density record. With incorporation of a broadband light source, scanning monochromator and photo detector array, a high speed random access optical memory system is realized. The system is executed in terms of a silicon based manufacturing technology allowing advantages of low cost and small physical size resulting from photolithographic batch-processing producibility.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1992Date of Patent: December 6, 1994Inventor: Dale R. Patent number: 5339051Abstract: A micro-miniature resonator-oscillator is disclosed. Due to the miniaturization of the resonator-oscillator, oscillation frequencies of one MHz and higher are utilized. A thickness-mode quartz resonator housed in a micro-machined silicon package and operated as a "telemetered sensor beacon" that is, a digital, self-powered, remote, parameter measuring-transmitter in the FM-band. The resonator design uses trapped energy principles and temperature dependence methodology through crystal orientation control, with operation in the 20-100 MHz range. High volume batch-processing manufacturing is utilized, with package and resonator assembly at the wafer level. Unique design features include squeeze-film damping for robust vibration and shock performance, capacitive coupling through micro-machined diaphragms allowing resonator excitation at the package exterior, circuit integration and extremely small (0.1 in. square) dimensioning.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1993Date of Patent: August 16, 1994Assignee: Sandia CorporationInventors: Dale R. Patent number: 5198716Abstract: A micro-machined resonator, typically quartz, with upper and lower micro-machinable support members, or covers, having etched wells which may be lined with conductive electrode material, between the support members is a quartz resonator having an energy trapping quartz mesa capacitively coupled to the electrode through a diaphragm; the quartz resonator is supported by either micro-machined cantilever springs or by thin layers extending over the surfaces of the support. If the diaphragm is rigid, clock applications are available, and if the diaphragm is resilient, then transducer applications can be achieved. Either the thin support layers or the conductive electrode material can be integral with the diaphragm. In any event, the covers are bonded to form a hermetic seal and the interior volume may be filled with a gas or may be evacuated. In addition, one or both of the covers may include oscillator and interface circuitry for the resonator.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1991Date of Patent: March 30, 1993Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventors: Ned A. Patent number: 5142414Abstract: The electrically actuated light filter operates in a cyclical temporal mode to effect a tristimulus-color light analyzer. Construction is based on a Fabry-Perot interferometer comprised of a high-speed movable mirror pair and cyclically powered electrical actuators. When combined with a single vidicon tube or a monochrome solid state image sensor, a temporally operated tristimulus-color video camera is effected. A color-generated is accomplished when constructed with a companion light source and is a flicker-free colored-light source for transmission type display systems. Advantages of low cost and small physical size result from photolithographic batch-processing manufacturability.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1991Date of Patent: August 25, 1992Inventor: Dale R. Patent number: 5062689Abstract: The electrostatically actuatable light modulator utilizes an opaque substrate plate patterned with an array of aperture cells, the cells comprised of physically positionable dielectric shutters and electrostatic actuators. With incorporation of a light source and a viewing screen, a projection display system is effected. Inclusion of a color filter array aligned with the aperture cells accomplishes a color display. The system is realized in terms of a silicon based manufacturing technology allowing fabrication of a high resolution capability in a physically small device which with the utilization of included magnification optics allows both large and small projection displays.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1990Date of Patent: November 5, 1991Inventor: Dale R. Patent number: 4479385Abstract: A digital quartz accelerometer includes a pair of spaced double-ended tuning forks fastened at one end to a base and at the other end through a spacer mass. Transverse movement of the resonator members stresses one and compresses the other, providing a differential frequency output which is indicative of acceleration.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1982Date of Patent: October 30, 1984Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Department of EnergyInventor: Dale R. Koehler

Patent number: 4316276Abstract: A solid-state electronic timepiece in which the output of a high-frequency time base is divided down to produce low-frequency timing pulses that are applied to a display actuator adapted to selectively control a multi-digit electro-optic display to present the "time-of-day" and "seconds" as well as other aspects of time information such as calendar date and month. The actuator also serves to supply roll-over pulses to advance the display at a rapid rate for setting purposes. In order to selectively render the display effective in any one of the several aspects or in the setting mode therefor by means of a singlmdmanually-operated coding key, a mode selector is provided which is responsive to the key and operates in conjunction with the display actuator. Code signals produced by the key are decoded by the logic system to produce command signals that are fed to the actuator to cause the display to operate in the aspect mode to present the desired aspect or to operate in the setting mode.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1974Date of Patent: February 16, 1982Assignee: Bulova Watch Company, Inc.Inventors: Dale R. Patent number: 4075518Abstract: A micro-miniature stepping motor suitable for driving the gear works of an electronic watch wherein low-frequency timing impulses derived from a high-frequency time base are applied to the stator coil of the motor to cause the rotor therof to index ninety degrees in response to each impulse. The rotor includes a square rotor plate and a stator plate parallel thereto, a shaft secured to the center of the rotor plate extending through a central opening in the stator plate. Mounted on the underside of the rotor plate at the corners thereof are four permanent magnet blocks with their poles in mutual opposition to form a magnetic circuit between the rotor and stator plates whose lines of flux bridge the air gap therebetween. The stator plate has a generally square formation whereby the magnet blocks on the rotor, in the absence of a torque-producing force, seek to orient themselves to a stable position of minimum reluctance.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1976Date of Patent: February 21, 1978Assignee: Bulova Watch Company, Inc.Inventors: Dale R.
