    Abstract: There are disclosed novel compositions of matter comprising monoalkylphenols prepared by selectively alkylating the olefin component of a thermally cracked sulfur-containing petroleum distillate derived from residua. The monoalkylphenols have certain ortho to para ratios and may be used to prepare a number of useful derivatives such as ethoxylated and propoxylated surfactants, sulfoalkylated products, sulfurized antioxidants, overbased phenates, dithiophosphate derivatives, formaldehyde reaction products and similar methylene bridged products which are useful demulsifiers.

    Abstract: Piston deposits resulting from neutralizing combustion acids present in the lubricating oil circulating within the lubrication system of an internal combustion engine are reduced or eliminated by first contacting the acids with a soluble weak base in the piston ring zone of the engine to form soluble neutral salts containing the weak base and the combustion acids. Thereafter, the neutral salts are contacted with a heterogenous strong base immobilized within the lubrication system by outside of the piston ring zone. The strong base displaces the weak base from the neutral salts, returning the weak base to the oil for recirculation to the piston ring zone for further use. The remaining strong base/combustion acid salts are immobilized as deposits with the strong base rather than on the piston. In a preferred embodiment, trioctadecyl amine is the weak base and zinc oxide is the strong base. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the weak base is incorporated on a substrate, preferably a cement binder.

    Abstract: There is a disclosed an improved lubricating oil dispersant suitable for both gasoline engine and diesel engine lubricating oil, the dispersant being prepared in a sequential process whereby a polyolefin succinic anhydride is reacted first with an alkylene polyamine and subsequently with maleic anhydride of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkenyl or alkyl succinic anhydride to provide a diimide dispersant having a final mole ratio of 2.3 to 3.0 moles of anhydride per mole of polyamine.

These reactions can permit the incorporation of varnish inhibition and dispersancy into the ethylene copolymer while inhibiting cross-linking with resulting viscosity increase, haze or gelling.

    Abstract: Deposit formation on the interior surfaces of structures confining heated hydrocarbon fluids such as refinery units, particularly preheating stages associated with process units such as distillation units, hydrotreaters and thermal crackers, is inhibited by incorporating in the feed stock a small percentage (usually at least about 0.0005 weight percent) of a macrocyclic polyamine formed by cyclodehydration of reaction products of hydrocarbon substituted succinic anhydrides or carboxylic acids with poly 3-amino propyl compounds or by acylation of macrocyclic polyamine and polycyclic polyamines with hydrocarbon substituted succinic anhydride or carboxylic acids. It is desirable in some instances to dissolve additionally in the hydrocarbon fluid such as a feed stock along with the macrocyclic polyamine an oil-soluble dispersant, antioxidant and mixtures thereof.

    Abstract: Polyisobutylene is prepared from a mixed C.sub.4 hydrocarbon feedstream using an AlCl.sub.3 --HCl catalyst system wherein the HCl is introduced separately into the feedstream to form organochloride in the feedstream. Polymer product having a very narrow molecular weight distribution is obtained over the Mn range of 700 to 3,000. Dispersants derived from this polyisobutylene exhibit substantially improved performance in lubricating oil compositions.
