  • Patent number: 6607665
Abstract: A disposable filter cartridge, in which the entire filter cartridge is disposable. The filter cartridge includes a tubular filter element substantially permanently retained to a lid such that the filter element cannot be removed from the lid without extreme force. The filter element includes a ring of filter media having ends potted in cup shaped end caps. The lid includes a central hub that is inserted through the opening in on of the end caps and ultrasonically deformed or flared radially outward to provide a lip that engages the top end cap for axial retention. The filter element is free floating and can be moved or tilted a small degree axially and can also be freely rotated relative to the lid.

  • Patent number: 5988399
Abstract: A spin-on filter including an improved baseplate preferably die cast from aluminum and an improved seaming lid preferably stamped from sheet steel. The baseplate includes a hub joined to a rim by ribs. The rim includes slots that receive tabs from the stamped seaming lid to provide for torque transfer between the canister and baseplate. The baseplate provides a seat for the seaming lid interfit with the baseplate to form a outer gasket groove. The baseplate provides the groove inner wall, while the seaming lid provides the groove outer wall and base. The inventive design in the baseplate and seaming lid provide for a groove for receiving an outer gasket and for torque transfer without complex or costly manufacture.

  • Patent number: 5906740
Abstract: A spin-on filter including an improved baseplate preferably die cast from aluminum provides an inventive outer gasket retaining groove. The baseplate comprises a hub joined to a rim by ribs. The rim provides a generally cylindrical wall and a seating surface extending radially outward therefrom. The cylindrical wall defines an inner vertical wall for the outer gasket retaining groove. Horizontal ribs extending from the top of the wall provides an inventive retaining device for securing and aligning an outer gasket in the retaining groove. The inventive baseplate can be used in filters with or without a seaming lid. The present invention improves the fastening technique for both types of aluminum in the baseplate filters.

  • Patent number: 5788859
Abstract: A spin-on water-separating fuel filter has a built-in central drain tube for providing a sump port at the connection end of the spin-on filter located near the fuel inlet and fuel outlet ports. Water removed from the fuel is collected in a sump at the base of the filter. The drain tube, supported in the bore of the filter element, has a sump end projecting into the sump, and an outlet end adjacent to and aligned with a central threaded opening at the connection end of the filter. The outlet end of the drain tube, self-centered near the threaded opening, has a captured gasket which forms the sump port. When the filter is installed on the mounting head, the outlet end of the drain tube is coupled to a short stub tube projecting from the center of the central threaded neck to form a sealed passage for evacuating water from the sump.

  • Patent number: 5766468
Abstract: A dual media fuel filter which combines the functions of filtering the fuel passing from a fuel source to a lift pump, and the function of filtering the fuel passing from the lift pump to the fuel injectors. The present invention provides a fuel pump with distinct primary and secondary fuel filter cartridges which are compression loaded into a self-contained oil filter canister adapted for threaded attachment to an engine block. The primary filter cartridge is provided to filter fuel drawn under suction from a fuel source into a lift pump, and is therefore provided with a relatively coarse filtering medium to allow for adequate fuel to pass therethrough even under negative pressure and cold temperature conditions. The secondary filter cartridge is provided with a relatively fine filtering medium to filter the fuel passing from the lift pump and into the fuel injectors.

  • Patent number: 5144978
Abstract: The valve includes a rubber gasket which is clamped and sealed to the sheet metal vessel of a fuel/water separator by a rivet nut and which serves as a seat for the valve head of a valve member that is screwed into the rivet nut. When the valve member is opened, the valve head moves upwardly away from the gasket to allow air to enter the vessel through one passage in the valve member and to enable liquid to drain from the vessel through a separate passage in the valve member. The valve member may be formed as two die cast parts which interfit with one another to define the passages and which eliminate the need of machining the passages. Alternatively, the valve member may be a single die cast part with internal passages, there being a die cast operating knob attached to the valve member.
