Patent number: 10477095Abstract: Device logic in a mobile device configures a processor to capture a series of images, such as a video, using a consumer-grade camera, and to analyze the images to determine the best-focused image, of the series of images, that captures a region of interest. The images may be of a textured surface, such as facial skin of a mobile device user. The processor sets a focal length of the camera to a fixed position for collecting the images. The processor may guide the user to position the mobile device for capturing the images, using audible cues. For each image, the processor crops the image to the region of interest, extracts luminance information, and determines one or more energy levels of the luminance via a Laplacian pyramid. The energy levels may be filtered, and then are compared to energy levels of the other images to determine the best-focused image.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2016Date of Patent: November 12, 2019Assignee: SRI InternationalInventors: David Chao Zhang, John Benjamin Southall, Michael Anthony Isnardi, Michael Raymond Piacentino, David Christopher Berends, Girish Acharya, Douglas A. Patent number: 7253642Abstract: A method for sensing an electric field includes processing digitized electric field signals, e.g., from an electric field sensing probe. The processing may include performing a Fast Fourier Transform of the digitized electric field signals to provide an indication of the magnitude of the electric field, and may include processing the digitized electric field signals at a rate that is related to the speed at which a movable sensing probe is moving. The method may include performing unweighted and/or weighted averaging in relation to processing electric field data, setting a comparison threshold, providing a human perceivable indication, or a combination of the foregoing.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2005Date of Patent: August 7, 2007Assignee: Power Survey CompanyInventors: David Kalokitis, Peter Zalud, David Christopher Berends, Christos Alkiviadis Polyzois

Patent number: 7248054Abstract: A sensor for sensing an electric field includes a movable sensor probe including one or more pair, typically three pair, of electrically conductive electrodes, and may include one or more pair of selectively switchable auxiliary electrodes. The probe is movable and may be mounted on a vehicle or trailer. A processor may process electric field signals from the probe for providing a human perceivable indication of the electric field. The processor may perform a Fast Fourier Transform of the electric field signals to produce an indication of the magnitude of the electric field, and may perform unweighted and/or weighted averaging in relation to processing electric field data, setting a comparison threshold, providing a human perceivable indication, or a combination of the foregoing. A speed at which the sensor probe is moving may be utilized in processing the data.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2005Date of Patent: July 24, 2007Assignee: Power Survey CompanyInventors: David Kalokitis, Peter Zalud, David Christopher Berends, Christos Alkiviadis Polyzois, Frederick John Vannozzi, Frank Bowen Lang
