Publication number: 20130057168Abstract: A power adaptor for a solid state light source is disclosed. The power adaptor comprises an input (10) for connection to a mains power supply, a drive circuit (60) for providing an output suitable for driving the solid state light source, and a discharge circuit (50) adapted to drain power by providing a discharge current path. The discharge circuit (50) is adapted to be active during at least a portion of the period in which the drive circuit (60) is inactive, and the discharge circuit (50) is adapted to be inactive during at least a portion of the period in which the drive circuit (60) is active.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 1, 2010Publication date: March 7, 2013Applicant: HOLDIP LimitedInventor: David Thomas Summerland

Patent number: 8242711Abstract: A power adaptor (20) for a lighting unit (50) having a solid state light source (50a,50b,50c) is disclosed. The power adaptor (20) comprises an input (22) for connection to a mains power supply, a power transfer module (40a,40b,40c,140a) that is coupled to the input (22) and provides an output suitable for driving the solid state light source (50a,50b,50c), and a controller (30) that receives a voltage signal from the input (22) and is able to deliver a control signal to the power transfer module (40a,40b,40c,140a) for reducing the power drawn from the input (22). The power adaptor (20) draws current from the input (22) as a function of the voltage at the input (22) in order that the power adaptor (20) appears as a variable resistor to the mains supply.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2008Date of Patent: August 14, 2012Assignee: Hold IP LimitedInventors: David Thomas Summerland, Charles Pollock, Helen Pollock

Patent number: 8013537Abstract: A power adaptor for a lighting unit, comprising an input for coupling to an electrical power supply and a controller adapted to monitor the input and operable to provide at least two independent electrical outputs; each output having a power level based on an amount of power available at the input. The independent electrical outputs may be used to supply and control an intensity and/or color characteristic of a solid state lighting unit; comprising at least two separately controllable colored emitters.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2005Date of Patent: September 6, 2011Assignee: Hold IP LimitedInventor: David Thomas Summerland

Publication number: 20090085494Abstract: The present invention relates to power adaptors for solid state lighting units and fixtures, of a kind including light emitting diodes, one of the adaptors comprising an input for receiving a phase controlled input power signal of varying on-duration and a controller coupled to the input and operable to produce at least one pulsed output driving signal in which both the duration and height of the pulses are varied according to the on-duration of the input power signal, to thereby control a light intensity output of the solid state lighting unit, such that the output is made to vary in a way that substantially matches the intensity response of the human eye. Various other arrangements of power adaptors are described along with dimmer controllers for use with the power adaptors, including some which involve motion sensing techniques.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 4, 2006Publication date: April 2, 2009Applicant: E-Light LimitedInventor: David Thomas Summerland

Patent number: 5739604Abstract: The stator of an electric motor is provided by coils 22 disposed in an interrupted-annular array about a central space such that a path A through the array is provided whereby a selected one of a plurality of rotors 21 can be moved in the plane of and through the array into and out of said central space. In the preferred embodiment each rotor 21 is a gobo freely rotatable on a wheel which can be indexed to bring it into a light path, when it will be positioned to be rotated when the coils 22 are energised. The non-annular disposition of the coils 22 results in a motor of low torque but it is is adequate to rotate a gobo disc, which is simply a perforated sheet of metal. As applied to a disco lighting unit the motor of the invention provides a much cheaper and simpler drive arrangement for gobo discs.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1997Date of Patent: April 14, 1998Assignee: Mad Lighting LimitedInventor: David Thomas Summerland
