  • Patent number: 6865644
Abstract: A system and method for industrial control I/O forcing is provided. The invention includes a processor, shared memory and an I/O processor with cache memory. The invention provides for the cache memory to be loaded with I/O force data from the shared memory. The I/O processor performs I/O forcing utilizing the I/O force data stored in the cache memory. The invention further provides for the processor to notify the I/O processor in the event that I/O force data is altered during control program execution. The invention further provides for the I/O processor to refresh the cache memory (e.g., via a blocked write) after receipt of alteration of the I/O force data from the processor.

  • Patent number: 5881247
Abstract: A bus structure for interconnecting the modules of an industrial automation controller includes DATA lines and associated control lines that enable interface circuits on each module to transfer frames of data. The interface circuit includes a flow control circuit for managing resources within the receiving module, and thus controlling the flow of data over the backplane bus. As soon as a message begins to be received, the flow control circuit makes a determination as to the availability of resources within the module to successfully receive the data frame. If sufficient resources are not available, a busy indication is returned to the transmitting module, and the transmitting module then aborts the transmission.

  • Patent number: 5099449
Abstract: An industrial controller has an I/O scanner that may scan I/O modules at differing rates depending on the intrinsic bandwidth of the controlled process variable. The user defines an update rate for each I/O module reflecting the bandwidth of its associated variable. The scanner continuously updates a table of I/O events for each I/O module or I/O rack listing permissive and mandatory I/O execution times associated with each event. Using this event table, the I/O scanner determines the next I/O module to be serviced. If the event cannot be serviced on schedule, indication of an event slip is reported to the controller.
