    Abstract: A plural-beam cathode ray tube includes an electron gun directing electrons towards a faceplate having an electrode biased at screen potential. The electron beam is magnetically deflected to scan across the faceplate to impinge upon a pattern of phosphors thereon to produce light of different colors depicting an image. A first conductive coating near the tube neck is biased below screen potential and a second conductive coating between the neck electrode and the faceplate is biased at screen potential. A gap between the first and second conductive coatings varies in distance from the faceplate so as to be non-Z-planar. The non-Z-planar gap is preferably partly within the region wherein electrons are deflected by the magnetic deflection yoke and partly more proximate the faceplate than such deflection region.

    Abstract: A cathode ray tube includes an electron gun directing electrons away from a faceplate having an electrode biased at screen potential. One or more electromagnets located on or near the rear wall of the tube envelope are biased with dc currents so that the electron beam (three beams in a color tube) is deflected by the magnetic field produced thereby to impinge upon the faceplate. The electron beam is magnetically deflected over a relatively small angle as it exits the electron gun to scan across the faceplate to impinge upon phosphors thereon to produce light depicting an image or information. The electromagnet closest the electron gun is typically biased to produce a strong magnetic field to deflect electrons to the faceplate near to the electron gun. The electromagnets more distant the electron gun produce magnetic fields to direct electrons towards the faceplate, with the electromagnet most distant the electron gun deflecting the electrons to tend to increase the landing angle thereof on the faceplate.

    Abstract: Large visual displays are comprised of an array of smaller display devices or modules, each of which displays a portion of the image to be displayed so that together the array of smaller display devices displays the complete image. Unlike conventional large displays which necessarily seek to minimize the edge areas of the smaller display elements that do not display an image so as to minimize the “seams” or gaps between the image portions, the present display device projects image portions scanned from less than the entire display area of the smaller display devices in an array to create an image on a substantially flat panel that is substantially free of visual “seams” or gaps between the image portions. Thus the display device may employ display elements that do not have narrow edges and that are not contiguous to generate overlapping sub-images.

A third electrode proximate the faceplate is biased at or below screen potential to direct electrons towards the faceplate, thereby to increase the landing angle of the electrons thereon. A metal and ceramic support includes a resistive voltage divider to which ones of the electrodes connect.

A further pair of electromagnetic coils proximate the faceplate is biased by an oppositely poled substantially constant current level to direct electrons towards the faceplate, thereby to increase the landing angle of the electrons thereon.

    Abstract: A cathode ray tube and a plural beam electron gun therefor include a main lens that comprises a tubular focus grid G5 and a conductive coating on the inner surface of the tube neck. The neck coating extends from the region of focus grid G5 towards the faceplate of the cathode ray tube. Preferably, the exit of the focus grid G5 is non-planar and is curved or undulated and focus grid G5 includes an aperture plate intermediate its entrance and exit. The aperture plate preferably has an elliptical center beam opening and connected-semi-elliptical outer-beam openings, to better converge and focus the outer and center electron beams. Also preferably, the focus grid G5 is centrally located in the tube neck and at least partly surrounded by the conductive neck coating.

A plurality of electrodes located on or near the rear wall of the tube envelope are biased at graduated potentials so that the electron beam is deflected by the electrostatic field produced thereby to impinge upon the faceplate. The electron beam is magnetically deflected over a relatively small angle as it exits the electron gun to scan across the faceplate to impinge upon phosphors thereon to produce light depicting an image or information. The electrodes may be biased at or below screen potential, with the electrode closest the electron gun typically biased at a negative or ground potential and the electrode closest the faceplate (i.e. distal the electron gun) typically biased below screen potential to direct electrons towards the faceplate, thereby to increase the landing angle thereof.

    Abstract: A projection tube has a phosphor-coated faceplate at one end of a vacuum envelope and a plural-beam providing electron lens structure at the opposite end thereof. The electron lens structure includes four electrodes having axially-aligned apertures defining parallel channels for the plural electron beams to pass through to be focused and converged onto a small spot on the faceplate. The first and second electrodes of the electron lens structure shape the electron beams and the third and fourth electrodes thereof converge and focus the electron beams toward the same location on the faceplate. The potential applied to the fourth electrode is at or close to the potential at the phosphor, and is substantially higher than the potential applied to the third electrode. The lens structures of the third and fourth electrodes may each include an inner electron lens structure and an outer electron lens structure.

    Abstract: Display panels having at least one suspended fibrous cathode containing an electron field emitter are disclosed. The fibrous cathode is supported by a substrate (10) containing two sets of parallel rows of crests and valleys. The first set of parallel crests (11) and valleys (12) provide the valleys along which the fibrous cathode is aligned. The second set of parallel crests (13) and valleys (14) is perpendicular to the first set. The valleys (14) provide the means for suspending the fibrous cathode. The display panels can be produced in large sizes while still maintaining high quality and efficiency.
