  • Patent number: 5879903
Abstract: Selection of Streptomyces viridochromogenes DSM 4112 for resistance to phosphinothricyl-alanyl-alanine (PTT) results in PTT-resistance selectants. The DNA fragment which carries the phosphinothricin(PTC)-resistance gene is obtained from the total DNA of these selectants by cutting with BamHI, cloning of a fragment 4.0 kb in size, and selection for PTT resistance. This gene is suitable for the production of PTC-resistant plants, and as a resistance marker and for the selective N-acetylation of the L-form of racemic PTC.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 7, 1995
Date of Patent: March 9, 1999
    Assignee: Hoechst Aktiengesellschaft
Inventors: Eckhard Strauch, Wolfgang Wohlleben, Walter Arnold, Renate Alijah, Alfred Puhler, Gerhard Wohner, Rudiger Marquardt, Susanne Grabley, Dieter Brauer, Klaus Bartsch

  • Patent number: 5322647
Abstract: In a process for chlorine-free bleaching of cellulose with an .alpha.-cellulose content of more than 90%, preferably from boiled cotton linters, more than 75% whiteness is achieved in a single-stage process using oxygen. The bleaching is conducted using the oxygen obtained by disproportionation of peroxo compounds in the pH range from 6 to 13 and with the bleaching time, depending on the bleaching temperature of 35.degree. C. to 15.degree. C., being between 15 and 150 minutes.

  • Patent number: 5077399
Abstract: Phosphinothricin (PTC) selection of bacteria which are not fungus-like yields PTC-resistant selectants. The DNA fragment which carries the resistance gene is obtained from the complete DNA of these selectants by constructing a gene bank and screening for chemical modification of PTC. The resistance gene can be localized to a fragment which is 2 kb in size, and selection for PTC resistance. This gene is suitable for producing PTC-resistant plants and propagation material thereof, and as a resistance marker as well. Microorganisms which contain this PTC-resistance gene can be used in sewage treatment plants.
