  • Patent number: 5280773
Abstract: A method and apparatus for injecting fuel into a combustion chamber of an air compressing, spontaneous ignition, internal combustion engine are provided. An adjustment member of an injector is actuated electrically and is controlled via an electronic circuitry, with the fuel quantity being withdrawn from a pressure chamber. The adjustment member acts upon a release sectional area of a restrictor. An adjustment member in the form of a magneto strictive rod is provided. The release sectional area is controlled by a control voltage, generated by the electronic circuitry, and can be chronologically modulated.

  • Patent number: 5195487
Abstract: The present invention relates to an injection system for air-compressing combustion engines. In order to reduce the combustion noise of diesel combustion engines it has been suggested to divide the injection step into a pre-injection and main injection. In order to improve the velocity of the injection quantity increase during partial load and/or at low revolutions per minute it is suggested that a pressure wave generator is arranged downstream of the injection pump and to further provide a volume reservoir in parallel to the pressure wave generator. The pressure wave generator ensures that the passage of the injection line is opened only when a predetermined pressure has been reached. After opening of the pressure wave generator the pressure will not drop as quickly since fuel will be supplied by the volume reservoir even when the injection pump has only a low piston velocity.

  • Patent number: 5167370
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for intermittently injecting fuel into a combustion chamber of a combustion engine. Efforts to reduce the emission of pollutants and the noise level of Diesel engines are geared towards a control of the heating process. According to the present invention this is achieved by employing the valve needle of the injection valve as a control member for the fuel supply into the pressure chamber of the valve body, whereby the valve needle is actuated to open and close the valve at a high frequency in short intervals. In conjuction with the high fuel pressure, a good droplet size distribution is realized which leads to a homogeneous fuel-air mixture. Dividing the fuel injection process into short intervals by relatively simple design measures results in an extended heating period which positively influences the NO.sub.x contents.

  • Patent number: 5103785
Abstract: A fuel injection device for air compressing combustion engines is provided. In order to reduce undesirable combustion noises it is suggested to divide the injection step into a pre-injection and a main injection. For this purpose, a pressure wave generator is introduced into the injection line which ensures that, even under partial load and at low revolutions of the combustion engine, due to the sudden opening of the pressure wave generator, a high pressure level for the pre-injection is provided. The opening pressure of the pressure wave generator is controlled by the play of forces between the effective hydraulic piston surface and a closing spring, respectively, a piston, whereby the piston may be actuatable via a performance range controlled auxiliary pressure source. Due to the high pressure level provided the pre-injection portion is finally atemized. Subsequent to the pre-injection the main injection commences with a delay resulting from the travel time difference between the two injection lines.

  • Patent number: 5079917
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for regenerating a soot filter of a Diesel combustion engine. For the burning of soot deposited on the filter two coupled Helmholtz resonators are provided with the exhaust gases being introduced into the resonance pipes at their center portion. The timed ignition of the burners generates pressure waves in the system which may oscillate. When the top of a pressure wave is reached in one of the resonance housings, the temperature rises due to the adiabatic compression process such that the soot is ignited in the down-stream filter. Thereby the filter is regenerated due to the burning of soot. The burners are ignited in phase opposition so that the pressure waves generated by the burners are eliminated by interference at the location of the opening of the exhaust gas line into the resonance pipes. An increase of the counter pressure in the exhaust gas line due to negative feedback of the pressure waves is thereby prevented.

  • Patent number: 5054445
Abstract: The invention relates to a fuel injection system for self-ignition internal combustion engines. The noise reduction of Diesel engines requires new injection systems. According to the invention a pre-injection and a main injection is achieved by employing to injection lines of different lengths. The difference in length is selected such that the time difference of the pressure waves for travelling the respective lengths corresponds to the desired time delay between the pre-injection and the main injection. In order to account for the compressibility of the fuel both injection lines are maintained at a standing pressure. The hydraulic effect of the injection lines on each other is prevented by check valves and by-pass valves. The controlled injection significantly reduces the combustion noise.

  • Patent number: 5044157
Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing carbon that has been collected in an exhaust gas filter of an internal combustion engine utilizing electrical energy that is introduced via an appropriate electrode arrangement. In order to obtain a more homogeneous current flow and hence a greater (more rapid) burning of carbon without great expenditure, the thermal heating-up of the carbon is effected in exhaust gas conveying chambers and in the filter with the aid of an electrostatic alternating field that is induced between the electrodes and produces radially directed, axially equalized discharge currents, so-called shift currents.

  • Patent number: 4829766
Abstract: A method and apparatus for disposing of particulate matter retained in an exhaust gas filter of an internal combustion engine, using an electric current source. For the purpose of good auxiliary energy utilization and minimization of equipment complexity, ignition and combustion of the particulates are initiated by the flow of current through the particulate matter itself (the particulates themselves serving as an electrical heating conductor). A suitable electrode configuration is provided to supply the ignition energy to the filter element. The electric input for the combustion of the particulates is applied via an impressed power supply.

  • Patent number: 4811559
Abstract: An apparatus for removing soot from the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine with the aid of a winding filter (surface filter) that is disposed on a support member. In order to burn off the soot in a controlled manner, this filter insert is provided with an appropriate electrode configuration. To simplify the electrode arrangement, and to improve the degree of soot deposition, the support member is designed as a wound or wrapped cage that undertakes the electrode arrangement, and untwisted roving threads, which are wound parallel to the periphery, i.e. at right angles to the axis of the wound cage, are used for forming the wrap structure.

  • Patent number: 4788819
Abstract: An apparatus for removing soot from the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine using a loose material filter. The object is to confine the loose material in a particularly effective manner so as to produce a very high degree of soot separation in the filter. This is achieved essentially in that the (loose material) fixing element is composed of two vertically and coaxially disposed perforated tube members that form a first annular chamber, with those surfaces of the perforated tube members that face the first annular chamber being each provided with a fine-mesh screen and adjacent thereto, a coarse mesh screen. The exhaust gas passes through the filter insert transverse to the gravitational effect of the granulate particles. To compact the granulate fill, the first annular chamber can be charged with compressed air via a second annular chamber that is adjacent thereto and is provided in the upper region of the filter housing.

  • Patent number: 4711209
Abstract: A fuel injection system for self-ignition internal combustion engines. At least part of the connecting line leading from the injection pump to the injection valve includes two circuits of different lengths which are connected in parallel in order to obtain a pre-injection phase and a main injection phase. In order to accurately set the fuel quantity for pre-injection, and the time interval relative to main injection or, respectively, the timing of the two fuel injections, and to make them independent of the level and the time characteristic of the pump pressure, i.e., ultimately independent of the speed and load of the engine, a special metering valve unit is provided in the shorter circuit of the divided connecting circuit, and a check valve unit is provided in the longer circuit at the end of the latter. Furthermore, the ratio of the diameter of the fuel line leading to the injection device, including the shorter circuit, to the diameter of the longer circuit (time-delay circuit) is between 1 and 2.
