Patent number: 9428943Abstract: A modular latch for an automotive vehicle is provided. It includes a latch core (a housing and a ratchet and pawl rotatably mounted to the housing), a mounting plate that secures the latch core to the vehicle. The latch cure can use any of a plurality of different mounting plates for a lift gate latch, a decklid latch, and a sliding door latch; A latch module is mounted to the latch core to provide different functional including a manual release latch module, a power release latch module, a power lock and unlock latch module, and a power cinching and release latch module. The latch cure may fit a more or less universal envelope. The latch may employ one or more status sensors. Those status sensors may sense striker position, and may not necessarily include any sensors mounted to monitor ratchet position. The latch may include a layered latch core in which one or more sensor members move in different planes from the pawl and ratchet.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2008Date of Patent: August 30, 2016Assignee: Magna Closures Inc.Inventors: Scott J. Patent number: 9027971Abstract: A hood latch having an extra-long fishmouth for enabling a vehicle hood to deflect downwardly upon impact, such as when hit by a pedestrian in a frontal crash. To prevent this deflection when the hood is slammed shut in ordinary use, a stop lever is pivotally mounted to the latch housing. The stop lever features first and second arms defining a slot therein. One arm has a proboscis thereon and is biased to align the slot with the fishmouth, with the proboscis jutting into the fishmouth. The proboscis receives an impact from the striker and rotates the stop lever to a blocking position wherein the non-proboscis arm intercepts the striker and prevents it from reaching the bottom end of the fishmouth. In the closed position the ratchet retains the striker at an intermediate depth in the fishmouth, enabling the striker to travel toward the bottom end thereof.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2012Date of Patent: May 12, 2015Assignee: Magna Closures Inc.Inventors: Darek Barczynski, Hongying Wang, Jianjun Yu, Dikran Ghorghorian

Publication number: 20140338129Abstract: A bed, comprising: a user support structure including a body support member having a head region and a foot region, and a foot support member positioned proximate the foot region of the body support member and projecting laterally from the body support member; a frame for supporting the user support structure on a support surface; a coupling mechanism coupling the user support structure to the frame and providing for relative movement there-between; and an actuator that is configured to move the user support structure relative to the frame between a user rest position and a user reception/departure position, such that when in the user rest position the body support member is oriented to support the body of a user lying at least indirectly thereon, and when in the user reception/departure position, the body support member is oriented laterally to the foot support member such that the foot support member is oriented to support the user standing thereon.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2014Publication date: November 20, 2014Inventors: John Robert Scott Mitchell, Dikran Ghorghorian, Gabriele Wayne Sabatini, Traian Miu

Patent number: 6666483Abstract: A latch assembly (10) has a housing having a mouth. A ratchet (12) is pivotally mounted to the housing and is movable to cooperate with the mouth to pivot between an open condition, a primary closed condition and a secondary closed condition for receiving, engaging and cinching a keeper of a striker. The ratchet (12) is biased to the open condition. A pivotally mounted pawl (40) is biased into engagement with the ratchet for releasably retaining the ratchet in the primary closed condition. A secondary release arm (20) is mounted to rotate about a first axis and a second axis. The secondary release arm (20) is rotatable about the first axis between a retracted position and an extended position, and is rotatable out the second axis between an engaging position and a disengaging position. The secondary release arm (20) is biased to the retracted position and biased to the engaging position.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2002Date of Patent: December 23, 2003Assignee: Atoma International CorpInventors: Grzegorz Baniak, Kris Tomaszewski, Dikran Ghorghorian

Patent number: 6364379Abstract: A vehicle closure has a compartment latch that includes a safety device that is automatically engaged to disable the compartment latch when the compartment latch is unlatched. The safety device must be reset manually to restore normal operation of the compartment latch. Manual resetting requires repeated manipulation of a pawl lever to avoid inadvertent disengagement of the safety device, particularly by children.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1999Date of Patent: April 2, 2002Assignees: General Motors Corporation, Magna International, Inc.Inventors: Richard A. Roberts, Mark E. Campbell, Jack C. Wilmore, Lindley T. Berry, Dikran Ghorghorian, Sorin S. Tudora

Patent number: 6149210Abstract: A hood latch assembly (10) has a housing (14) having a mouth (13). A ratchet (16) is pivotally mounted within the housing (14) to cooperate with the mouth (13) to pivot between an open, a secondary closed and a primary closed condition for receiving, engaging and cinching a keeper of a striker (80). The ratchet (16) is biased to the open condition. A pivotally mounted primary pawl (18) is biased for engagement with the ratchet (16) to releasably retain the ratchet (16) in the primary closed condition. A pivotally mounted secondary pawl (62) is biased for engagement with the ratchet (16) to releasably retain the ratchet (16) in the secondary closed condition. The secondary pawl (62) has a release lever (20) which rotates between a deployed position and a retracted position. As the ratchet (16) engages the striker (80), the ratchet (16) will rotate in a latching sense from the open condition to the secondary closed condition.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1999Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Atoma International CorporationInventors: Trevor Hunt, Ravi Joshi, Dikran Ghorghorian, Kris Tomaszewski
