The method includes determining whether a rotational speed of the electric auxiliary pump exceeds a predefined threshold value, and when the rotational speed of the electric auxiliary pump exceeds the predefined threshold value for the rotational speed, detecting that the main pump is leaking, recording an error in an error memory of the vehicle, and demanding an engine start.
